Ratchet straps on trailers - VOSA fining drivers

A bit of a discussion on the Disco site about VOSA clamping down on people using ratchet straps on rope hooks on trailers.

If anyone does this, it might be worth a read.

Yes Vosa are clamping down on unsecure loads. They have been told to ramp up the revenue because Vosa and all the supporting bodies are running at a loss, and have been for years, alledgley Whistle Must be all the new vehicles they have to keep buying. A company that i do work for, run a fleet of curtain sided vehicles, one driver got pulled over for a routine check, all he was carrying on the back of his vehicle was a box that he kept his straps in, nothing else, and because his box wasn't strapped down, he got an on the spot fine. Shocked No warning, no next time make sure you strap it down, just an instant fine. Whistle The thing is, he could have put his box of straps in his cab had he known that Vosa was going to be so petty. I would have taken it to court. Twisted Evil So be warned, they take no prisoners.

It looks like it's not just the commercial drivers who are going to be checked. And I bet many who use trailers only occasionally will be doing things "wrong" - perfect targets for some revenue raising. Hence my starting this thread as a warning.

Although I can see down the side of our horse trailer with the RRS's mirrors, I'll try to remember to use towing mirrors again. That and I might look at getting the break-away cable replaced as it's looking a little rusty.

A friend tows a vehicle trailer quite often to pick up bits and pieces for some cars he's rebuilding. I know he uses straps on the rope hooks so I'll mention it to him too. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

How Vosa expect every man and his dog to keep up with all these changes i'll never know Shocked Fortunately i get regular emails of any changes to do with the transport industry, so i try and keep on top of them.
