SMART stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology", and is a standard feature of modern (and not-so-modern) hard drives. It's found in just about every hard drive around nowadays and in short it's a technology that allows you to monitor the health and performance of a physical hard drive. You could quite happily run a "SMART health check" on your own computer. I'm a tech bloke so saw the test and knew that I understood what it did and could interpret the results - turns out I should have had a little less trust in the software
