HELP and ADVICE NEEDED

Hello there

I've just joined the forum, I'm thinking of getting my forever car (I usually change car every 2 years). I currently own an Audi A4 convertible and have decided to buy an RRS and hoping for a 2010 facelift one. I just need some guidance really just to either say yes I'm going to get it or go for something else.

The MPG are pretty similar to the petrol Audi and the diesel RRS, I have a man that usually services my car really cheap under 200 quid including MOT and I'm sure he would do the RRS, but if not could you please tell me servicing costs. I do about 80 quid a tank of petrol which does 250 miles. Obviously tax is higher and my parking permit will be higher. I have always wanted one and have come into some money where I can afford one, just want to know what your running costs are like so I have an idea. I've test driven one and loved it. Who can't and have been wondering about the Vogue but have seen poor right ups about it. Anyway any advice good and bad would be brilliant.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

The naive RRS owner to be (I hope!)

xxx

I get about 450miles from a tank of derv. from a 30 V6 lots of town

Service is every 12 months or 16,000 miles whichever is soonest. Servicing alternates between 'A' and 'B' schedules with first service being 'A' (oil etc.) and then 12 months (or 16,000 miles) later the main 'B' which checks a few more items.

My 'A' service cost was £450, 'B' service £700 - but there are additional items as the age and mileage increases. These are LR main dealer (but be sure to ring around dealers as they will come done in price) -you could save more if your's are done at an independent garage.

Get a warranty and but be sure to keep within the LR (or whoever's) warranty conditions if its done outside the LR dealer network.

If you search the Forum you can find the service sheet details.

I wouldn't be too concerned about fuel costs. I think my computer says I average 24mpg or so (not sure how accurate that is) but I generally don't consider it thirsty compared to other cars I have had.

About servicing, I think with these you really need someone that specialises in Range Rovers. I use a local independent. I wouldn't use a main dealer unless I had to. Your average half decent "all round" mechanic may spend hours trying to find something a specialist would fix in minutes. Plenty of mobile blokes on here who know their eggs too.

Do factor in other ongoing repairs though as stuff going wrong with them isn't unheard of. Whistle

I am a fairly recent RRS owner. I had some older full fat ones before, but this is my first RRS. I am enjoying it up to now. There isn't much else out there that appeals to me really.

Haven't had mine long but looks like I'm getting around the 25mpg mark. Tax is £490 and from what I have read the services are not cheap.
If you are planning on an older model then I would recommend getting an extended warranty and although original costs are higher, look at using a main dealer. These are expensive cars with gadgets galore and when things go wrong if you don't have a good warranty it can become very dear!

Having said all that, they are a great car to drive. Cool

Do you know what model/engine you fancy?

I've seen a 59 plate 3l diesel. With a lot of extras in it. It's the facelift model and just over average mileage. I've been checking out some independent dealers this morning and there are a couple on Essex, one further away but a full service and MOT is under £300 and a closer one to just over £400 so that's ok. I suppose I've been lucky and had all my cars serviced from a fantastic mechanic for the last 15 years. I will speak to him and see if he does range rovers he did own a disco so imagine he will which will make it cheaper. I'm planning to keep this car until It dies of old age.

But logically I'm thinking of putting a small amount of cash away for service and parking permit each week so it isn't such a killer around the time of service.

I'm hoping to be the proud owner in less than a month. Feeling impatient and excited!

Thanks. I was thinking old with low mileage but that doesn't mean it won't come with any problems if not more than newer with just above average! I don't do more than 7 to 8 thousand miles a year. Mainly urban driving. But we do go on road trips so it will be good to be in a car without looking like students with a car packed full just for a weekend away!

I'd not use just any mechanic, unless they really know RRS's and have the diagnostic equipment. Here's how I found this out. My mate changed the rear brakes and handbrake pads. No problem, easy and cheap. 30 miles later on motorway the handbrake came on (electronic handbrake). Searched manuals and they said you had to turn some sort of adjuster 3 turns, advice on forums was 10 times ! Mechanic hadn't done either. Problem solved. Until it went into a LR dealer and they said the handbrake pad needs replacing. I said it was done 3 months earlier. They said 'and did you tell the computer on the car that? '. So, apparently, you have to connect a PC to the OBD and inform it that new pads have been fitted so that it can make the electronic adjustments. No problems now for 18 months. Just goes to show that even the simplest of jobs are not that straight forward on modern cars.  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

If your annual mileage is that low and comprises mostly urban trips you might reconsider going for a diesel as the facelift cars will all have a DPF; these filters don't much like short trips and can require regeneration and, eventually, replacement.

You may be better to go for the petrol model which, although not good on fuel, wont have the DPF and associated issues. The difference in fuel costs might balance out the 'possible' DPF maintenance expenditure. Services will cost much the same.

The diesel is that the same for any diesel for any brand? If it will be petrol I won't be get one 4.4l I'd be living at the petrol station!

Please excuse my naivety.
