Hi, I'm new to the forum and after some advice. I have a 2005 tdv6 2.7 with 44k on the clock and am thinking of remapping to get rid off the bad turbo lag you get on these engines. I work for Fords and was actually involved in the development of this engine and the 3.0ltr variant - manufactured prototype block, head and crank. I have had the car from nearly new and have blanked the EGR's but not taken out the butterfly valve in the intake. I've only done the basic blank so the EGR tubes are still in the intake body as I had to do it on the quick and then never got around to doing them properly and it's now 2 years later.I noticed over a period of time that cold start up starting to get a bit lumpy and read somewhere this could be dirty injectors so have put some redex in to clean. I've since had on 3 occasions turbo over boost fault when accelerating hard which I've put down to the waste gate sticking probably from the redex loosening all the soot. Touch wood this fault hasn't occurred in the last couple of weeks. This has made me think about doing the EGR's properly and taking the butterfly out - first question is does taking this out really matter? This got me thinking I might as well get a remap done but do these remaps take into account the blanked EGR's and removed butterflies? I don't know the best place to go in the a Essex area so would appreciate any advice on where to take it? Also any thoughts on running with two stroke oil to keep internals clean and lubricated?

Your ESF warning will be due to a seized actuator rod. Fairly common issue, and can be lubricated, and freed off in place

I think that what you think is turbo lag is not - it is the gearbox trying to work out what it wants to do. As an experiment try driving in Command Shift and changing down and up manually - I think you will find that the "turbo" lag is gone - if it is there it will show up in a drag off the line.

If it is still there, assuming there issues with the car check how current your software updates are - often this will assist.

Hi disco Mikey, thanks - this is what I assumed from the fault, is the clean a simple spray with wd40 and push the rod by hand or would running TSO clean it?

Hi garycol, yes you could be right its gearbox and the sensation just seems like turbo lag. To describe what happens, it's normally when you're coasting upto a roundabout nothing coming so you coast onto the roundabout then apply throttle and nothing happens for a couple of seconds so you put your foot down harder then all of a sudden the car takes off like a jet. It nearly caught me out once when your looking what's coming around the roundabout and you think yep I've got enough time to go before that car coming around reaches me , only to put your foot down and coz nothing happens all of a sudden that car is on top of you beeping his horn. Once you know this trait it's not a problem but annoying. I thought an engine remap would solve this as it would make the car more responsive?

Yep spot on - I have found the gearbox only changes down to 3rd or 2nd while you are still moving and when you floor it the gearbox doesn't know what to do for a moment (this feels like turbo lag) then it decides that you want go and changes down and takes off like a scolded cat.

I actually took someone with me and drove so the car was in 6th and normal drive - then slowed down and asked them to noted the change downs - they confirmed that the gearbox rarely changes down below 3rd when I slowed for a round about or a traffic light but not actually stopped - then they noted the hesitation and then the change to either first or second depending on speed.

It is less of an issue (but still there in sport) and virtually non existent in command shift.

You can learn to drive with it - slowing well before the light and driving up to the light under minimal power, no flooring it and driving off at a more leisurely pace. Driving the car like you stole it most of the time so the gearbox learns that you are a hoon and will want instant power. live with it and be aware of it - some have said remapping fixes it (mine has a BAS map and I still have the issue) or like the engine, have software up to date.

This issue seems to be common in all makes that have the TDV6 and the ZF gearbox - in Australia we have a SUV called the Ford Territory and it is unique to Aust - it has a Discovery spec engine and gearbox and has exactly the same issue.

Re the "lag" issue, have you tried cleaning the MAP sensor? A 5 minute job and many find it seems to improve the responsiveness.
Worth a try before you go down the clearing gearbox adaptations followed by a gearbox software update for which of course you need someone with a suitable diagnostic tool. On my TDV8 I did all the above and haven't had the problem since.  2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Yes forgot about that - I cleaned mine when I blanked it and didn't make any difference but others have found it useful.

Cheers guys, I will certainly try the MAP sensor ( as soon as I find out where it is). Do you recommend taking out the butterfly valve in the intake body as I've blanked the ergs?
