Telenav and Red Bend Eliminate Outdated Maps for In-Car Navigation
Scout for Cars to offer over-the-air updates to maps and points-of-interests
Waltham, Mass. and Sunnyvale, Calif. — Jan. 6, 2014 — Telenav, Inc. (NASDAQ: TNAV), the leader in personalized navigation, has partnered with Red Bend Software, the leader in Mobile Software Management (MSM), on a proof of concept to provide over-the-air (OTA) map and point of interest (POIs) updates to Scout for Cars. Automakers soon will be able to offer all the benefits of integrated, on-board personal navigation with up-to-date content and services.
According to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study, consumers are increasingly dissatisfied with their factory-installed navigation systems — due in part to outdated map content. However, on-board maps are hard to keep updated wirelessly because map file sizes are typically in the tens of gigabytes. The common alternative is to buy a CD or DVD for system updates, which is inconvenient and expensive to car owners.
Today, at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas, Telenav and Red Bend introduced a demonstration of how the maps and POIs in Scout for Cars can be updated wirelessly using the Scout for Phones companion app. With Red Bend's automotive software management solution, Scout can download map updates over wireless or Wi-Fi networks. When the smartphone connects to Scout for Cars, it will automatically upload the updates to the in-dash system to provide drivers with the latest maps and content.
"Using Scout to keep on-board maps updated gives car buyers confidence in their factory-installed navigation system throughout the car's lifetime," said Harris Warren, Automotive Product Manager at Telenav. "Leveraging Red Bend, Scout for Cars can now eliminate a major consumer pain point and help them get where they're going faster, cheaper, and with less hassle."
According to Sharon Peleg, Red Bend Software Founder and CTO, "Working with Telenav to bring OTA updating to the world of in-dash navigation is another example of how Red Bend keeps innovating and can manage the entire connected car, to make people's lives continuously better." 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled
