Suspension knocking....again!!!

Morning all

I've spent hours reading the various threads on this ongoing issue, but have a question that I haven't found the answer to so far....

I bought my 57 reg HSE in sept '11 with 49k on the clock. The dreaded knocking was diagnosed and 'fixed' by my local main dealer in march '12 (replaced ARBs at a cost of £185) at 53k miles. I've now done 67k and the knocking has returned Big Cry

I realise components wear out, but is this 'normal'? I have loads of service and maintenance documentation from the previous owner and I don't think the bushes were replaced before March '12, so I'm a bit peed off that they seem to have gone again Neutral

Car is in for MOT next Week and I've asked for the suspension to be looked at at the same time. I'm going to question the longevity of the previous 'fix' but has anyone got a view on this?

Cheers Stu

Did your dealer changed bushes only
or clamps as well

(lr introduced new type of clamps to prolong bushes life time)

Looks like just bushes- receipt says "BUSH - STABILIZER BAR LINK" 2 of these for the princely sum of £23.50 + vat

Perhaps I should have had the clamps too Neutral Stu

Try this drive the car at 10 to 15 mph and dab the foot brake hard quickly, if it knocks then you need lower arms changing, its a common fault on older cars...

Flack Thumbs Up

Thanks Flack, just tried that and seems ok. Just getting the tell tale clonk on speed bumps and when moving the steering wheel side to side at slow speeds.

I guess I'm hoping someone will tell me the bushes should last more than 14000 miles with no off roading....... Stu

depending if the new bushes were fitted with old (read - non modified) clamps
than its quite possible they will not last longer Sad

My Stealer wants £185 per set plus labour works out at circa £1,200 are we talking about the same bushes?

Shocked crikey, hope not Paul

Maybe your stealer is talking about replacing the arms as well. Labour was £130 plus the vat, but they only replaced the bushes, which sorted the knocking and seemed to tighten up the front end, if you know what I mean. It's only in the last month or so the knocking has returned.

Not sure if it helps you but part number is RVU500011 Stu

£1200 sounds more like the cost of replacing the anti roll bar itself (assuming a dynamic response ARB is fitted).

Either that or they're planning to split the vehicle in order to do the bushes - that's several hours of labour cost straightaway. As people have replaced the ARB bushes on their driveways, it would seem that splitting the vehicle to do them is somewhat excessive. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Sounds like that's the cost of replacing the front lower suspension arms. My dealer quoted me a very similar figure for lower arms. 2014 L405 SDV8 RR Autobiography Cool

Replaced rear anti roll bar (for another problem)

Lower steering column Thumbs Up

Visually OK, but when removed from the car, quite often you find play in the sliding joint or U/J Thumbs Up
