To the OP: define "good" please. Is that the best price (cheapest), the best value (however one defines that), the best performing (in snow specifically or just generally (so cold, wet braking is a premium, for example)), hell, even the best looking?

This topic has been done to death in the last few months so there are lots of threads covering it.

The Vred Wintrac is popular but is seemingly out-classed these days by newer tyres from other manufacturers (suggested from reading newer reviews of winter tyres). I note that in car sizes the Wintrac has been replaced by a newer version so maybe the 4x4 one will be too. I have Vred Wintracs fitted at the moment but the next set of winter tyres won't be Vred WIntracs - I'll probably go for a Pirelli or Continental (maybe Goodyear but will see what is about nearer the time). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

have heard good reports on the Vred's more so over on the D3 site

I just think/hope that any reasonable quality winter tyre is going to be way better than any summer tyre .....

which is why I have just bought four Vred;s on rims ..... wait for it.... and have not even bought a car yet

I'm not fully sold on the idea of needing winter tyres, if you drive according to the weather conditions you will manage.

My work vehicle runs Firestone winter hawks all year round (fine as along as you don't exceed 70mph) and I can still lose control if you drive like a tw*t when it's icy or has snowed. On the flip side my zx10r runs the softest tyre for maximum grip but it won't stop me losing traction. It's not exact science but it's my logic.

Its more about safety than travelling in extreme deep snow Daz, yes common sense prevails in tricky conditions, but if you live high up on the hills you want the best grip you can get so that you don't look a numpty stuck in your 4x4 going nowhere when a 2wd vehicle goes sailing past laughing at you trying to get out of a ditch. I bet the 2wd vehicle won't be an Evoque though.

The reality is that, like contraception, winter tyres are better than just hoping you'll manage when the time comes (sorry, bad pun). Sure, you can drive to the conditions and manage most of the time but the reality is that winter tyres are better for most of the conditions in winter and they give you much bigger margins. Those margins really tell when you take account of the numpties around you on the road. Cold, wet tarmac, dark conditions, half asleep or distracted drivers.

"You pays your money and makes your choice" of course. You can manage fine on summer tyres all year round but you'll manage better on tyres designed for the conditions.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Yep I suppose in the extreme cases they can be of use.

Before the winter hawks were fitted I just run normal tyres then I had some snow socks for when it got tough. Now on the winter hawks a few mates have still got stuck.

I have to be able to work not matter what the weather infact my work load increases in the bad weather so I have to able to get to customers. I have always managed no matter what the uk weather throws at me, even when I used all round tyres and I drive a fwd with about a ton over the rear axle so defiantly not the best set up for snow.

But how bad weather do we really get ?? Maybe a few weeks per year of snow, it's now mid December and still hitting over 10 deg in Yorkshire. Maybe if I lived in another country where it really snowed I'd invest but in Yorkshire I don't think we get it too bad.

Hence I can only comment on how it is round here, if you live somewhere it gets extreme then yep go out and fit some.

This is my first year on winter tyres so still waiting to see if its myth or amazing

Prior to this I used all season M&S tyres on 4x4's without incident. Before that I drove cars with normal tyres in Scotland, Northern England and Southern England - I have never been stuck but I have performed a few graceful slides and unfortunately some not so ending in write off's and repairs
