In Switzerland the plates are tied to the person, you go through your life with the same numberplate, in general.

Presumably they don't have scrotes cloning number plates either.

If we did that system then we'd need some serious jail time for plate cloners to stop people doing it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Our plates are made by those detained and enjoying striped sunshine. But if someone nicked my plate, it would get them stopped the first time they were checked by a police camera. Easier just to nick the car, then they can join their other colleagues making plates! Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

They could nick your plates and fit them to a vehicle same model and colour like they do here Sad

My Uncles friend was awoken during the night by the police and asked to show them his car - he opened his garage and they put their hand on the bonnet then said thats fine sir sorry to bother you. Turned out some low life had cloned his number on a car and used it in a hit and run - had the bonnet been warm he might have had a problem Shocked Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

But I've got a really nice Richbrook brushed alloy tax disc holder that matches the car so nicely Big Cry

Any ideas what could be put in the holder instead?

Maybe a RRSPORT.CO.UK logo? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Your Vignette nearly got me in trouble though - crossed the border from france and did know where to get one and border was very busy so drove to Hotel in Zurich and asked concierge - only to be told I could of been fined on the spot if stopped

Yes, is a 200 CHF fine, plus you have to buy the vignette.

We just went to vote on it couple of weeks ago, they wanted to increase the cost of the vignette to 100 CHF, it was a resounding no Thumbs Up
Unfortunately expecting a fuel price increase in the future, they always get their money Sad

I haven't heard of cloning issues here.
Another advantage of our system is that you can use the same plate on 2 cars(same for bikes. for classic vehicles up to 7 or 9) paying only 20% tax/insurance on the second car. '08 RRS TDV8

i personally think our system is flawed at every level, do away with tax put it on fuel at say 3ppl, everyone pays, that way no need to employ people to issue discs, maintain a vehicle tax website, post discs, sit on side of road with tax cameras, everyones a winner!

The problem with the "tax on fuel" route is that it removes a check on the MOT/insurance status of the vehicle. With a system that requires you to buy the VED separately the others can be checked prior to issuing the VED (or accepting payment and putting you on the system as will be the case in the future).

What needs to happen is a wholesale change in vehicle licensing and insurance. The problem is that to do it will be expensive and will no doubt cause mayhem too. I'd like to go down the "number plate is yours and proof of your entitlement to drive" route as in Switzerland. And I'm in favour of a minimum 5 year prison term for anyone possessing a cloned/illegal plate and 10 years for cloning the plate or issuing illegal ones.

Of course that would kill off the DVLA's little scam of selling people vanity plates. It would also be unpopular with the insurers too unless it allowed for people to have insurance in place as part of the plate issuing/retention system. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

That's the way it works here.

When you go to our equivalent of the DVLA to register a car, you have to show proof of insurance before they issue the plates or allow you to move them to a new car.

If then at time of renewal you do not pay the insurance, after a couple of letters, police will come to your house and seize the plates.

So if a car has plates it means tax and insurance paid. '08 RRS TDV8

3rd party insurance is included in the cost of registration here so, if a vehicle is legally registered, it is insured. If you want fire, theft or comprehensive cover, you take it out in addition.

Yes, Muddy, they could nick the plates and fit them to a similar car but, easier just to nick the car? I think anyone would think twice before nicking my plate anyway, it's distinctive with just 2 letters, easier to nick a more vanilla plate. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
