sudden coolant leak

Hi just had an 08 RRS for three weeks, and the honeymoon period has just ended. My good lady was driving it and the low coolant level came on on her way home, it did not stay on so she continued to drive home, roughly six miles with no overheating warnings.
I had a look when I got home and found that there is no coolant in the expansion tank and the hoses appear to be empty also.
There is no sign of emulsified oil in the engine oil, (in the filler cap or the dip stick) it looks like there is coolant in the bottom of the engine on the sump cover, it has drained out through the join and has the slippery feel of glycol. I think she may just have got away without frying the engine as she doesnt drive fast and it is a slow country road, so the engine shouldn't have seen much load.
I am not brave enough to turn the engine over until the coolant is recharged, but I cannot find a procedure for bleeding the air out the engine. does any one know of any special precautions I need to follow.
Also does any one else have similar experiences?
