Transmission thump and vibration - Not the torque converter!

My otherwise perfect 2007 TDV8 HSE has had two annoying intractable faults since acquired in July 2012.

There is a low frequency rumble at 1500 rpm which changes to a higher frequency vibration at motorway speeds; not intrusive - but just 'not right'.

Secondly when cruising at speeds of about 70 when it should be in 6th gear; every now and again there is a thump from the transmission. It may only happen once on a 50 mile motorway trip. It seems as if when I hold the speed higher at say 80 it doesn't thump.

I've tried all the usual fixes such as brake light switch, brakelight bulbs, gearbox fluid change, gearbox reset, software updates, gearbox connector rod, fault code reading etc with slight improvements but not a cure. Reading live values showed that the torque converter lets go when the thump happens and then closes again.

If you want a full history of this to date read the pdf where I've described in more detail actions taken to date:

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...istory.pdf

After consulting several transmission specialists who were all uncertain but suspected the torque converter I had the torque converter changed two weeks ago. Unfortunately this has not changed the symptoms although it is nice to know the TC won't need changing again. May be my imagination but the car seems to accelerate faster for a given throttle opening as if the TC lock-up clutch is locking more readily. All the upward and downward gear changes are smooth and kickdown works as it should as does sport and command shift modes.

Not sure what to do next. My transmission specialist has suggested changing the valves in the transmission mechatronic as the next logical step to cure the thump.

As for the vibration I'm starting to think the front or rear propshaft joints could be worn or even the rear diff might have a worn bearing.

Any thoughts anyone? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Like you have suggested I'd want to rule out driveline issues such as prop-shaft centre bearing (they do have one don't they?) and problems with CV joints.

Have you tried jamming the two rear harmonic dampers (i.e. the bloody big weights that hang down behind the bumper, more or less in-line with each rear wheel and give it a drive to see if its any different.

When you say you have had software updates did they use the anti-bump files to update your V8.. or just a update of the ecu files.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Flack, as far as I know they just installed the most up to date firmware for the gearbox and engine ECUs. That would I thought have incorporated the anti-bump fix? People use the terms 'update', 'reflash' and 'install' but it is all the same thing is it not? As I said the shifts are all smooth its just the weird thump at times when the box shouldn't be shifting that doesn't make sense. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thats why I asked if they had done anti bump file update as this file is specially for the V8 with your symptoms and is not a regular flash file, I know quite a few who have used it and it cured the thump on the transmission.

Flack,
Thanks. So how do I go about getting this mystical set of files installed please?

It was Bristol Transmissions who updated the firmware and then later a Land Rover Dealership confirmed that the firmware for gearbox and engine are up to date. Confused Confused

I was aware of a bump fix but as far as I can see it was for shifts in lower gears. That's not my problem. Confused Confused 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
