England 2007 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Zermatt Silver
Newbie Looking To Buy = Excited!

Hello,

I'm new here but must say what a great forum!

Ever expanding family, so I've researched the market and it doesn't get better than a Range Rover Sport! Smile

So, I'm looking out for a TDv6 2.7 circ 2006/7 and people say nothing less than an HSE and my budget is approx £16k

Couple of questions as there seem to be some fine examples out there!

- What should I look for and ask the dealer?
- What to be aware of on a test drive?
- Is it necessarily a poor purchase to buy one with 90,000 miles+ or does it depend on what type of miles they've been, full service history and has the cam belt been changed?

This will be my first RR...so need some good advice.

Kind regards,
Simon

welcome Thumbs Up

Firstly, all the cars you are looking at should have had the cambelt done, regardless of mileage Thumbs Up (5 year service)
So check the paperwork.

You're looking at cars around the EURO IV engine swap over, which is when they made the engine check light illuminate when one (or both) of the EGR's failed. On a pre EURO IV engine you can block off the EGRs and no errors will be shown on the dash, post 2006 you will have to replace the failed unit(s) at £500odd each Confused Lok for black soot out the exhausts when accelerating, and excessive lag...

Suspension gremlins occur on all RRSs so look out for compressor noises/whining especially on start up, and any dash HDC errors.

Try a few cars, some of the symptoms above will only be obvious once you know what the car's performance/characteristics are, and this only comes with familiarisation!

And finally my best advice is to get a warranty Mr. Green RRS gone

Thanks AWD Man...

This is the kind of great advice I'm looking for.....I haven't even test driven one yet!

Believe it or not, I've been driving 25 years now and have never driven an automatic. So it's all new to me!!

Currently drive an X Type jag and 20 odd years ago had a Land Rover Discovery, which at the time was superb!

Hi Simon

I have a 2005 RRS with the V6 diesel (known as Black Bess). I bought it at 3 years old, avoiding the initial depreciation. It had done 40,000 miles when i got it, it has now done 95,000.

It is BRILLIANT.....

I had a diesel P38 Rangie before, which was also a great car, if slow. The Sport addresses all that, although the seats are less comfy. I suppose you can`t have everything. I would definitely recommend driving one, you will never look back.

I wish mine had the V8, but they were too expensive at the time. The V6 has enough power however.

I do all servicing and repairs myself and the only things I have needed to do is to replace discs and pads twice, (the second time was last week) and now I need to replace corroded metal brake pipes at the rear. I also had to replace the (electric) door handle on the tailgate. The suspension occasionally gets confused and dumps the air, but it seems to reset itself if you switch off and on again. Weirdly, this only happens in winter. I need to investigate sometime.

As for the auto box...who needs to be changing gear? Seriously though, the shifts are very smooth, almost imperceptable at times. There is a lag if you arrive at a roundabout and try to accelerate quickly to join the traffic, whilst you wait for the auobox to decide upon ratios, but you learn to drive around that.

Look for a good one and go for it!

Adam..

Slight correction here, its actually 7 years or 105000 miles, whichever comes first. Thumbs Up
Good luck with your search. Thumbs Up

Just playing Devil's Advocate here I suppose .... but why not consider the TDV8?

The difference in fuel consumption is not great and TDV8s don't have a cambelt to change and don't have any reported instances of the catastrophic engine failures associated with part of the oil pump casing falling off and the crankshaft bearing failure which seem to be relatively common on certain TDV6 MYs. Common enough to motivate owners have the oil pump casing replaced with an updated design as a preventative measure anyway. Don't think there is anything you can do about the crankshaft bearings other than pray.

True - there has been a few reports of catastrophic V8 failure too and may be consequent on turbo failure but it does seem to be very few.

Obviously I'm a bit biased. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks!

I'll consider a V8...unless others have opinions to contribute?

Is mileage a big factor I should consider?

Mileage is no more a consideration than with the TDV6 Thumbs Up

Thanks all for your valued input so far.

Just been looking at the market again and it seems that the TDiesel versions are in greater demand and therefore priced higher than the petrol 4.2 engines which seem very good value for the mileage and price...

So, should I definately be looking to focusing on finding a diesel rather than a petrol 4.2?

Would appreciate thoughts.

Our annual mileage would be approx 8k - so does this factor back in a petrol 4.2?

Regards,
Simon

If you're only looking at 8k miles a year then you are well within the affordable running cost zone of the supercharged 4.2

However, I'd never recommend someone with a budget of £16k to run the petrol car, you're looking at £110 to fill it and you will get 200 miles out of a tank... probably less.

The diesel's are more popular because at least you can avoid the filling stations and not be on 1st name terms with the attendants! RRS gone

^^^ Agreed, If you assume, say 15mpg for a S/C and 25 for a Diseasel (probably a little generous tbh), then you're looking at around £1,250 on fuel difference.....which to be fair isn't much in the grand scheme of things. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I had the same dilemma, I drove the V6 and the TDV8 and opted for the TDV8, which IMHO is a lovely smooth engine which suits the RRS. I do not do any more than 6k miles per year, so getting around 24-26 mpg is a good compromise.

Interesting reading this thread, and many others on here.

In a similar boat where we don't do huge miles, but fancy a treat, previously owned 3.0tdi Touareg and currently L200 Animal, so used to high running costs!

We go to my wife's family once or twice a year, which is a 2000 mile round trip, then if I do 50 miles a week I'd be surprised!

Expensive depreciating asset, but mine will come at the best possible price through the trade, so that will help a bit at least.

Looking loosely at 08/09, but would love a 10MY if we can stretch our budget a touch, assuming my research is right that the 10MY is the facelift version?
