Any Defender owners on here?

A Defender 90 pick up has come up for sale not to far from me, I've never had one before so I'm going to look at it tonight and possibly buy it if it's decent and we can work out a good price. Going to be taking a mate along who's got a Defender and know's what to look for.

It's a 1987, 114k miles, 9 months mot, 1 month tax, 200tdi engine. Below from the advert:-

"I have owned it for approx 3 years. In that time I changed the old knackered 2.5td engine for the fantastic 200TDI out of a K reg Discovery. I bought this for something a bit different to the normal euro boxes for the drive to work and as a daily use. I haven't been off road at all as that wasn't why I got it. All the panels are straight and tidy. The chassis is solid with only the normal welding on the rear crossmember been done. The bulkhead is solid and even the air vents under the windscreen work ok.

During my ownership I have replaced:-

As soon as I got it I wire brushed the rear 2/3rds of the chassis. 2 coats of red oxide primer then covered it all in Shultz.
Fuel tank
Changed clutch last September when I did the engine swop
Radiator when I did the engine swop
Brakes. Front calipers, discs and pads. Rear cylinders and shoes. All flexi pipes and copper lines.
Fitted the alloy wheels off the discovery with 30mm spacers
Ifor Williams canopy
Apart from the above it is original so remember its getting old. It starts without the need of heater plugs and goes like a train. The heater does work, but its always on hot hot hot as I caught the cable when fitting the engine. The temperature gauge is now faulty. As soon as you turn the ignition on the needle goes as far as it can to the hot side of the gauge. This is even before the engine has started. This means its the sender unit going straight to earth. Its a cheap part and easy fit, I just don't have the time to sort it at the moment."

I've had a quick look on the autotrader and prices seem to vary quite widely. I know it's hard to give a value without seeing a car properly, but does anyone have an idea as to what I want to be looking at paying for this is it's a good'un?

Yes the are a bit of an acquired taste, but I've never had one so need to scratch that itch. Luckily it won't be a daily, more of an option when I want to remind myself that car's have come a long way, and that my daily driver van isn't so bad afterall Laughing Current: 06 RR Sport HSE TDV6, Bonatti grey, black leather. Depends on price but 90/110 Defenders are generally priced on condition not on year, one thing I will say the arches are either too big or have been relocated higher to accomodate bigger wheels and those D1 wheels are too small which unless the speedo cable has been changed will give you a higher speed reading than you are actually going, See my gallery for a pic of mine to get an eye for the proportions

Spain

Looks like a bodge.
Possibly a non coiler converted to coil.

I have driven loads of them, cramped unless you are vertically challenged. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

Looks fine, not keen on the arches or Disco alloys but they are easy to sort.

Disco 200 is a good and well proven conversion (and a billion times better than the old Turbo diesel)

Certainly not a non coiler converted - so dont worry there (I think its the tasty arches possibly giving that impression!).

Value wise really does depend on how solid it is. Check the chassis and bulkhead carefully. If solid I'd pay £3000 for it and budget a few pounds to sort the wheels and arches.

If rotten run away (and dont trust the description, check for rust yourself!).

Also check the engine number is on the block and has been updated on the V5.

If you need anymore PM or email me jeremy.jackson@hadleygreen.co.uk (I've got one or two Defenders Whistle )

There's a few of us who've had that itch! Sound advice from Jeremy.

Mine was once upon a time very similar to the one you're going to look at, although 309Tdi.it was a Caledonian Blue basic pickup on white steel wheels.

James Thumbs Up

They look like after market arches, i spy some rivet holes along the top edge of them whereas your lower ones are smooth and much lower. The wheels do look like smarties in thoese arches Laughing

Luckily for me I'm 5 foot 9 so never had the problem of being to tall for anything Sad

I don't mind the arches but I cant help but think it needs an enormous set of tyres to match them. If they've been riveted on then they'd most likley stay as I don't want to be getting into arsing around repairing panels etc.

Appriciate your post! Cool

I'll question that plenty, good to know it's a cheap quick and easy fix though! Thumbs Up

Yeah the wheel's really don't do it for me in the slightest, but they're easy enough to change Current: 06 RR Sport HSE TDV6, Bonatti grey, black leather. Defender 90 pick up. Vito 110cdi

Chilly makes some very valid points, it does not look right with those arches & wheels, seems odd not to have bothered sorting out the thermo or whatever the issue is. Not sure I'd consider it as there are plenty of examples out there if you want a Defender, although £3k you are entry level end of the pricing scale.

As stated by others, always take a good look underneath looking for rot or significant off-road damage and check all docs and serial numbers etc as lots of these vehicles have history and not all of it is good.

That said I really miss mine and will be acquiring a replacement at some stage. --------------------------------------------------------

I'll be sure to check everything thoroughly, the lad I'm taking is also an mot tester so he knows where to be looking etc.

So if I'm paying less than 3k it's an alright deal, asking as its not a shed? Current: 06 RR Sport HSE TDV6, Bonatti grey, black leather. Defender 90 pick up. Vito 110cdi

I'm not very current on prices etc but I think you should be able to find a half decent one for £3k, avoid the TD as it has a bad rep (although I had one for a few years with no issues) but 200 or 300Tdi are pretty solid engines.

Great fun to drive. --------------------------------------------------------

Got a hell of a deal and she's a little belter, very tidy underneath, very tidy overall really, goes stops turns etc all as it should do. Wheel's most definitely need to go in favor of something that'll fill those arches Twisted Evil

Came with a ton of spares, full set of standard wheels with tyres, disco transfer box, some range rover seats, exhaust, tons of assorted parts, even a little model 90 pick up Laughing

Got a few little bits to sort out but nothing horrific, going to put together a list this weekend and make a start on it, might throw some pictures up when I've given it a once over :)
