Windows 8

Worth bothering with an upgrade to a 1 year old laptop? The laptop is more than capable of running W8 I just wondered if there was any great benefit in upgrading the OS.

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Santorini Black

I have just got a new pC for the office and it came with Windows 8.
Steep learning curve from Windows 7. It is best suited for a touch screen.
I would stick with Windows 7 for now, as there is a major update coming for Windows 8, which should make it easier to use. MY13.5 Autobiography, Santorini Black, Privacy Glass. Gone
Driving a milk float for now.

Bradders, don't bother with Windows 8 unless the laptop has a touchscreen. I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago that came with W8. Planning to wipe it out and install W7 on it as soon as I get a chance. Probably the most counterintuitive piece of software I have ever come across and trust me I have seen many ...

Bradders, I agree with Fkarim, stick with Windows 7, Windows 8 is pants especially for non touchscreen PCs and Laptops.

I have Windows 8 on my desktop and find it Censored . Changing settings, getting to programs (not Apps) takes forever just not user friendly Big Cry no idea what Miscrosoft were thinking.

Will be reverting to Windows 7 shortly as well.

Cheers

Wales 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange

have W8 on a 22" touchscreen and its great. Have put it onto a standard PC and don't notice the difference really. The main problem is lack of traditional 'start' or 'home' button in bottom left corner, but you can download it, called startmenu8 I think, (http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php) and then the PC is pretty much like W7 again

some people just don't like change - the same things were said about W7 V's XP  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Prefer RR Vouge S/C but they don't do Orange !

Its got now't to do with liking change - Windows 8 is rubbish proven by the fact that Microsoft is rushing to get a revised version out as quick as possible because of the user complaints.

Designed for touch screens and the type of finger gestures used on a smartphone any experienced keyboard user will find it slower for normal tasks. OK if all you want is to play on web, facebook etc

The problem with Microsoft is they make too much money bringing out a new os every year and then cause compatibility issues so you have to buy more programmes Evil or Very Mad

Apple on the other hand bring out new hardware every year but the os stays the same or free/cheap Laughing

I had windows 95 for years then ME that was Censored so had to get 98 eventually stopped at XP and went over to Apple and unlike ms I can use my laptop on snow leopard and mini mac on mountain lion without having to spend weeks working out where everything is now Rolling Eyes Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

B3EEE, it's not about resistance to change. I generally adopt new software and updates on my devices as soon as I can and more than happily learn the differences. However, the change has to be for the better in order to be successful. The fact is that W8 (where it is today) is not as suited to traditional mouse/touchpad and keyboard systems as it is to touchscreen ones. For example the number of clicks to do most simple things (log off, shutdown just to name a couple) has significantly increased. I know the keyboard shortcuts to do stuff but an average user doesn't. No matter how familiar you get, it will still be more steps to do things which is never well-received when it comes to software at least. Even Microsoft have kind of acknowledged the issues and are better blending the new Modern UI with the traditional desktop interface, more integration between start screen and desktop in the upcoming Windows 8.1 which is not going to be a service pack but a massive update due to the feedback they got. I believe the start menu is making a comeback too so that people don't have to install 3rd party tools on top of Windows just to perform basic operating system tasks more easily.

What is of real concern is that most car systems operate under a form of Window CE; a OS developed for early handheld units and which was, in my experience, pretty unreliable.

Now you know why your RRS has a mind of its own Big Cry
