Noisy wipers

Been driving all morning in the rain - aaaaaah, my wipers have got very noisy and been driving me mad. They judder on the backward stroke, but worse has been a 'knock' type noise each time the drivers wiper is vertical and changes to the downward stroke. It is almost like there is too much play in the wiper arm - but I've checked this. It seems like the rubber blades are too hard and don't like the change in direction.
Until now, the wipers have been okay (well average). Now they make an awful noise. I'm not happy that a car costing this much has such noisy wipers.
At the other end of the scale, the wipers on my VW T5 van are the best I've experienced! Matt

I'll keep you all posted on the result.

Do you think it is a bad rubber compound in the blades? Mine have been fine, then all of a sudden they are terrible and probably the worst I've ever had in any car (not quite as bad as my 1973 Mini - the wipers used to lift off the screen at above 50mph!). Matt

I've just spoken to my dealer about the wipers to see if there is an updated blade available or it is a known problem. Of course I got the normal responce - bring it in and we'll look at it, not willing to look into blade options or if this is a known issue first - we must have the car!

So on the next day when I'm free and it is raining and I have a spare 3 hours, I'll have to take it in. Matt

The only issue I have with the wipers is the fact that when you wash the car they don't lift off the screen like in any other car, they only lift about 2 inches. Strange. Unless that is to stop them lifting off the screen at speed, seemed odd that they didn't try and hide the wipers in some fashion so that they don't stick out so much as a 'wind stoppers'. Can't be good for aerodynamics or drag coefficient. L319 D4 HSE

Don't the wipers lift becuase the arms hit the bonnet edge? Matt

OK

I started this topic/query way back in October 2005 - Noisy Wipers Sad

Since then I have changed a blade [ at my cost ] .... used gallons of RAIN X ........ but not a cure ..... and only last week my dealer changed the left hand side [ passenger ] wiper arm. BUT.... although the passenger side is no working as it should = squeak free at long last, the drivers side is now even worse. So , back to dealer Saturday morning & they agreed to order in a new replacement arm fir the drivers side.

PLEASE let this be an end to my eternal noisy wipers Bow down

Noisy wipers

I am suffering from the same irritating noise (from the wipers!) I no longer use the auto function, i have to wait til the screen is soaked in rain before i use them otherwise they just drag across the screen.
Mines due back in the New Year for a list of warranty work... Now that other people are suffering with the same problem, i'll bring it to their attention. 2010 Discovery 4

MD, have you tried clearing the windscreen with white spirit? You may find that if you have been driving a lot on wet motorways you have picked up residue from a surface that has been dry for a long time and then once it has rained the deposited oil and rubber has been sprayed onto you screen and dried. Careful application on a rag should clear all the deposits off, but be careful not to get any white spirits on your paintwork and if you clean your wiper blades with it as well make sure that you rinse them well with hot soapy water afterwards. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My RRS was nine months old when it went back to Stratstone Woburn Green (Berkshire) for a list of about 20 jobs to be done.

Noisy, squeaking scraping front wipers was one of them, new blades were fitted by LR. The rear wiper (not cleaning properly) was put down to the tint treatment (fitted onto the outside of the glass due to heated rear screen) has been attributed to being the cause. I doubt this very much but they still didn't change it. BTW, they fitted the tint treatment!

I had rear mats fitted by dealer from new. Load of rubbish if you ask me!

Woolworths grade velcro and sticky pads with a plastic pins to hold them onto main carpets lasted about a month with 3 kids in the rear. LR have tried to use stronger velcro but now this has come adrift too about two weeks later.

The rear tailgate rattle is still there and the approved LR fix has been applied but cannot stop it rattling. New rear hatch now on back-order (which tells me this is a major problem)!

BTW, Stratstone seemed very keen to assist me after LR Customer Services became aware of my gripes. The car was with them for 4 days and beside a few software fixes (cabin heater not fast enough - better now) , the car came back with engine vibrtation through the steering wheel and a load of scratches on the paintwork that were not there when it went in!

You simply don't expect your stealer to damage your car do you? I cleaned it on Christmas Eve for the first time since the visit to Stratstone and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the damage to the paint job.

This is a life lesson for everyone - NEVER collect your car from your dealer when its dark!! (I reckon they use a coloured polish when they clean them to cover up dealer damage)!! It's finally gone! Replaced with BMW 730SE in Sophisto grey Xirallic finish with Oyster (Ivory) and black interior. DAB, Climate glass, Ceramic iDrive and gear selector, power boot and iPhone Bluetooth pack - luvvin' it!

I miss my old RRS "bucket" rattling around but it just had to go!
