Looked into this recently by ringing round several LR dealerships. According to form they all gave me different answers and most of the people I spoke to knew as much about auto electronics as next door's cat does.

What would the updates fix? I can understand updating the SatNav data but what else? My worry would be whether you are trying to fix something that isn't necessarily wrong, aka 'If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.' I'm sure I've gotten rid of many PC because all the updates and bug fixes have prevented the machine from functioning efficiently. 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG 2007 Exige S British GT SE Gone : 2011 3.0TDV6 HSE, Stornoway Grey, Ivory, Piano Black Trim, Paddleshift, Privacy Glass, Side Steps, Mud Flaps, Heated Steering Wheel, Timed Climate & Remote Park Heating |

Dealers will not update any software unless they need to or there is a fault, sometimes updating can effect some other ecu and cause problems, its always a risk when flashing the ecu's but as long as you have the back ups your fine.

There are a number of different types of updates, some like service packs, some fix issues, some are like upgrading the os.
