Updating every computer in the RRS.

I have been wondering how much they charge for updating the system.
My dealer told me 60 pounds every update and updating the whole RRS is around 6 updates. 91 BMW 850CSI

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

Looked into this recently by ringing round several LR dealerships. According to form they all gave me different answers and most of the people I spoke to knew as much about auto electronics as next door's cat does.

The best I can determine is that if your P&J is serviced at a franchised dealership then they should check all the software is up to date. Any ECUs that are not up to date should be updated which I THINK means deleting the old file and replacing it with the new one (also called a 're-flash'. The cost is included in the standard service charge.

If you just want the stealer to re-flash all the ECU's the cost is about £300 and takes at least two hours. Again I am speculating but if the car is misbehaving it could be that you have the latest software version but it has become slightly corrupted so 'reflashing' it should re-install a clean version.

Now I am going to hope that someone who contributes to this forum and knows all about software (strictly speaking firmware?) updates will post and tell us all the correct information. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

What would the updates fix? I can understand updating the SatNav data but what else?

My worry would be whether you are trying to fix something that isn't necessarily wrong, aka 'If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.'
I'm sure I've gotten rid of many PC because all the updates and bug fixes have prevented the machine from functioning efficiently. 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG

Dealers will not update any software unless they need to or there is a fault, sometimes updating can effect some other ecu and cause problems, its always a risk when flashing the ecu's but as long as you have the back ups your fine.
Dealers will also only update as built where as if you have a Faultemate or similar tool you can just do individual ecu's with software thats meant for a later model, just like we do for the D3 with the clock on the dash, but not all models of RRS can be done this way.

There are a number of different types of updates, some like service packs, some fix issues, some are like upgrading the os.

None change your interface or update the satnav mapping Mike
