If the light is on, there should be a code logged...

Probably a Lambda sensor

Had the same issue a month or so back driving to work got the RAC out who checked it and he cleared the fault which he said was a sensor value reading being different between the sensors on the exhaust so the car was running lean. He cleared it and touch wood not had problem again Freelander SE - Gone

As D-M said if the light is on there should be a fault code. I've had the light on 3 times recently. First time required a new O2 sensor. Second time it was related to the purge valve, this came on after filling the tank and being stuck in traffic. After a bit of open driving cleared the code using my IDDTool and it never came back. And just now the light was on with a warning "Bank 1 running lean" after a 300km blast at around 120kph the light extinguished itself...

The above isn't much help though if you're not getting a gault code for the engine...

Cheers

My light was caused by code P0430. The dealer replaced an O2 sensor and the left-side cat.
