Home AV Suggestion

Hi guys, I'm after some home AV advice Smile

I'm buying a 55" Samsung Series 8 LED TV to go on the wall and I want a 5.1 setup to go with it. I have been looking at the 2013 Denon & Yamaha recievers around the £500 range but need some advice on speakers.

The room is 20ft x 12ft and the TV is going on the 20ft wall. I know I will get better sound from floorstanders (especially at the front) but I'd like something I can mount on the wall but still get decent sound from.

Mainly used for TV watching, occasional gaming & movies and music through the receiver.

Working on a budget of about £700-800. Any suggestions?? LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

Is that budget just speakers or including receiver?

Just bought myself a new AV Amp and speaker system for the lounge to go with my existing 42" plasma, SkyHD and blu-ray player, well about a year or so ago,

Can't fault it, not the most latest models, but if it won five star it can't be that bad, ( though I got the older standard speakers, not the high gloss se versions)

a Onkyo TX-NR609 Amp
and Boston Acoustics Soundware XS 5.1 Both of them getting 5star reviews from What-Hi-Fi

Its 7.2 surround so I have the option to add a 2nd subwoofer and a extra set of surround sound speakers, but i don't think my room will be large enough

Have a look at the Yamaha rx-810, I've got one with a full bowers & Wilkins set up and the sound is awesome

Was £850 but come down to around £500 now, only 6 months later Big Cry

I've just decided to go down the Sonos route (sound bar and 2 x 'play 3') for my surround sound - I had a demo the other weekend and it really is superb.
I'm sure it's not as good as a proper amp and separates, but very easy to set up, looks nice and will push out a decent enough sound for me. Added benefit to, is that you can run all your music through it using the normal Sonos interface Cool ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I was after the Playbar at first too but wanted a stand alone sub. Adding all the Sonos equipment up soon gets expensive! Love that you can play through iPhone & iPad too.

A lot of the newer receivers allow you to do it through an App too. LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

Yup, forgot about the sub, I have one of those coming too. As you say, the cost does rack up quickly. Big Cry ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I've just replaced my wife "unfriendly" Monitor Audio Silvers for the 5.1 Cambridge Audio 325 Minxs

So far I've been happily surprised at their quality.

Oh and I got a new Amp too... I went Yamaha Thumbs Up

Natty little app with it that enables me to control the volume/mode from anywhere in the house via my phone, which is handy when you have two kids who keep ramping up the volume Rolling with laughter

Also it will accept airplay music Thumbs Up RRS gone

I went to listen to some Monitor Audio Mass speakers on the weekend (the 5.1 setup) and they sounded great.
They were being run off a Denon amp but the guy in store said the 2012 Yamaha will be a better option.

Going for this package:

Good deal I think seeing as the 5.1 setup is £800 alone. Amp and speakers both have awesome reviews and more importantly they sounded great!

Thanks for the help guys. Will get a pic up when its all done Smile LCFC. Receiver of threatening letters from Overfinch.

Probably out of your budget (you'll need a decent sub to go with them), but Artcoustic Speakers are on-wall speakers you can customise with fabric to match your lounge interior. They hang on the wall, sound pretty good according to those I know who have them.

I have in-wall KEF speakers for the front and two in-ceiling, full size speakers with no loss of space on the floor. Most people who come to our lounge don't even notice we have speakers.

About 5 years ago I got a Sony STR-dg820 and an Onkyo 5.1 set from Richersounds for just under £400 as a combo deal.

Don't get me wrong the speakers are not massive and they are paired with a 46" LCD Series 5 Samsung but they work extremely well and the volume tends to sit at 20-25 and for a really encapsulating movie sometimes 30 but they do easily fill the room with sound and the sub sits in a corner behind a sofa so pushes sound out well around the room and is generally at 1/2 volume for the best response in my opinion. The system set it self up by placing a setup mic where people are most often sat and only took a minute.

I have a few times put the volume upto 40 when out in the garden or working on the car and is very audible outside and i know it goes upto 100 which could probably blow the speakers at that kind of level but like i said they haven't gone that far..
These could probably suit your needs...

(might need to check how they wall mount though)

Cheap packages deal here though...

(speakers are the updated version of mine and have 2 slot in mounts on the back of each one which is great for mounting speakers as you just need 2 screws slightly broaching the wall surface to mount them Smile FFRR Owner, SSRR engine destroyer!(*2) & Creator of SSRR Smile

My Polk Audio Sub just went dead 2 days ago. The tech came and said its not getting any power, its 14 moths old and isn't used that much.

For the price to get a quote to fix it and the probable cost of the fix, I may as well buy a new one from somewhere. Not a great situation really. This time I will get bigger! Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
