Advice please - wait for RRS 2 for a year or..

Hi there - I am new (well I was a member some years ago but i forgot the passwords!)
I currently have a 2010 D4 HSE, which i am looking to change - I basically want something that handles better and is more of an occasion to drive. The Discovery has been brilliant, such a massive leap forward from the D3 we had years ago - its well equiped, very comfortable on a long run and loads of space for 3 kids and 2 dogs BUT while the 3.0 engine IMO is a cracker and it isnt short of relative get up and go, the thing just deosnt handle on bendy A or B roads...I also drive an Audi S5 which is quick enough in most circumstances but i do need a large family car and a 4x4 to tow a large twin axle trailer and for gentle farm duty. I would love a new FFRR but i cant afford or justify £75k on a car that will have jam covered over the seats and foot marks all over it within a week!

I have been looking at year old RRS HSE Luxury which seem to be coming down in price, mainly because of the new RRS2 i am assuming.

so 2 main questions; 1) is there a large difference in the feel of the D4 and RRS, suspension and handling. I have driven a RRS SDV6 on a test and while it certainly felt "different", and firmer, i couldnt really drive it extensively..
2) if i spend say £45k on a year old SDV6 HSE luxury, will i get throttled in 2 years time? I'd like to think that with the new one being realistically £60-65k for equivalent there is enough of a gap??

your views and help would be much appreciated. Also why are there no RRS in black without Privacy glass, IMO they look so much nicer and more compact without it....

thanks guys, really appreciate it. Does look cracking though the new one, and fair play to LR for a very slick reveal (bar the streaming issues!). Come a long way since my parents 1986 Vogue, which leaked, smoked and generally didnt work!

Wait just a little longer. I am not a big fan of the new one but I think that it's naive to think that it won't sell like hot cross buns at Easter. Regardless of the enthusiast opinions on here, it will make the old shape look dated very soon. It will be like D3 to D4 and then some. In 6 months, the current RRS will be less desirable and cheaper, just like P38 to L322, E53 X5 to E70 X5 etc. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

yes thanks for sure, i suppose though i could try and benefit from this, in that dealers are only too aware of the price dent on the latest "old shape" vehicles - very few people are going to pay north of £45-47k for an old shape car now so the choice is broad. It is going to be 18 months before the sensibly specced RRS2's are at my price point (c.£45k) - at which point a 2012 RRS might still be worth £32k ish? i have resigned myself to the fact that if you can keep depreciation to about £6k a year you're doing pretty well on new ish stuff...
Part of me thinks that at £45k fully loaded and almost new the 2012 RRS Luxury is good value for money...
as i get older i dont seem to have such a problem with not driving the latest thing...

i remember my father coming home from a trip to the Volvo dealer and being pleased as punch that he had managed to buy one of the last old shape V70's in a horrible green with almost white leather......he didnt get the last turkey on the shelf gag. I didnt know whether to laugh or cry....

i'm considering a RRS for my next car, now the new one on show, I think there will be some good deals coming around, but i can't get my head round will the old one prices drop like a stone somewhere near in the future, and if i buy now, that not good for me, but buy then it might be albeit i have the old shape

If its not available until late Qtr 3/Qtr 4 I think it will take a while to be massively available (remember the evoke), so i can see June 2014 being reasonable to see them in any easy option - possibly August/Sep 14.

Values wise - who knows the old sport was cheaper to begin with!! I bet you wont get much more discount for a last run current sport

I dont think there will be massive drops in value maybe 1 or 2k Mike

In answer to your point (1).

We were up at LandRover a few weeks ago about D4 suspension verses RRS. They said the RRS is programmed and designed to be firmer although just by how much etc. was not qualified. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

I think you have to remember that not everybody can afford the 60K+ for a decent spec. new shape, hence there will be a lot of people who are looking at the 2012/13 and earlier models because that's the one they can afford. This happens a lot, it happened with the Nissan GT-R due to the new model having a significant price hike the older cars values firmed up.

Look at Ferrari 430 values rock solid because there's nothing south of £200K for a new 458.

The people prepared to spend £45K on a used HSE Luxury, and those wanting the latest model with the equivalent spec of the used model are likely to be two very different people (i.e. one has £20K+ more in their back pocket!), so the prices of the used ones shouldn't be adversely affected.

thanks guys - that is helpful.
usually i would shy away from buying an old shape but for my needs i am not sure there is an alternative - ive had X5's (decent cars) and just dont like the other crop of 4x4's, ML's, Q7 et al. I did think about a cheaper family estate and a Defender but the RRS does both jobs, its a cracking car and i am sure the RRS2 takes it further again. I reckon I slip into this HSE luxury for 2 years, and then upgrade to the RRS2 with 7 seats. Interesting on that subject, a local dealer swore blind that the FFRR or RRS would never have 7 seats because of the roof line (that was 2 weeks ago..), they do sprout some crap sometimes these sales guys. This particular dealer (very close to Tunbridge Wells!) has always been compeltely hopeless, bordering on arrogant, i've bought 2 discovery's at the other nearest Kent dealer and they have been absolutely first class. It's a shame the standard of sales guys and their knowledge is so variable....
