TDV8 MAP sensors clean

The DISCO3 boys have a thing about cleaning MAP sensors as a way of improving performance and MPG if they are clogged up. As my TDV8 seems to have a prodigious thirst for fuel I gave it a go this week.
The two MAP sensors are easily found by removing the engine cover see pic with arrows pointing to the sensors:

Remove the Torx headed self-tapping screw from each sensor and they can be carefully pulled out with a bit of wiggling. Disappointingly mine were actually quite clean but I have been using BP Ultimate since purchase last June. Sprayed them liberally with Wynn's carb cleaner from a distance of about 6 inches and let them dry.

Refitting is simple although I should perhaps have put a smear of PTFE lube around the blue 'O' ring visible in the above pic to help them slip in more easily. Bunged the engine cover back on and it was good to go. Total time about 30 minutes and only one Torx driver required. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Yes I got a 20% improvement but I added some Millers Diesel Power Eco Boost to the tank at the same time so I don't know which made the difference Rolling with laughter Maybe it was both. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I did this also just a couple of weeks back.

I haven't noticed a massive difference in MPG, but I have only been doing short journeys.

However the throttle response is 100 times better then before. I'm running a BAS remap with KnN filter and in a couple of weeks I'm doing a little 600 mile journey so will stick some cleaner through the fuel also.

This is well worth doing to improve the throttle, it restores the confidence when sat at a T junction looking for a gap in the traffic. 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Tommy, that's good to hear. Were the MAP sensors fouled up and what mileage has the car done? Am very interested to hear if your mpg improves on your 600 mile trip. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I'm 57plate TDV8 with just over 60k on the clock.

The map sensors were a little grubby, when removed but looked like new when they went back in. A cotton bud dipped in the fluid cleaner was also helpful, however these are seriously fragile so full attention and a steady hand is needed.

I was hoping it would help the soot out the back when giving it some beans, however it still does that (only with the ECU map on the tuned program)

However "no poke without smoke!!!" Lol 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Just to update those interested.

I travelled just under 300 miles last night (A1 -M1) sat at 90 most of the way and I was averaging 26.4MPG as opposed to what I normally got 24.4mpg so it seems a slight increase is to be had from this task. I didn't put anything in the tank other than regular diesel, so I'm pleased with that result.

However anyone considering doing this its worth it for the increased throttle response. 08MY HSE 3.6 TDV8 Stornoway Grey, Twisted performance cat back... and shed loads of extras!!!

Thanks for the feedback Tommy. Not bad for a high speed long run. I'm assuming your figures are the on-board computer. At slightly lower speeds my (unmapped) TDV8 shows about 29 on the computer and actual calculated is 26.5. This weekend got caught in the motorway hold up from hell on the M25 at junction 25: 3 hours going nowhere which has knocked the average down to 22.8 Big Cry 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I've just pulled mine and they are mildly oily so re-fitted without cleaning.

From the above comments it's worth cleaning them then, even if they are lightly oiled? RRS gone

Only takes a few minutes to spray them with carb cleaner so while they are out you may as well try it. Reset fuel consumption on the computer and see what happens? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I've just checked mine and they're just a little oily - more on one than the other interestingly. I think I'll pick up some carb cleaner next time I'm in town and give them a clean. Be interesting to see if it makes any difference. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

For you TDV8 chaps I had mine Terracleaned 2 weeks ago.

Took a day to sort itself out afterwards but mich smoother. Reset the computer and drove 360 miles to Aberdeen and got 30.1Mpg. Journey was mixture of trafic and single and dual carriageway and managed 50 to 70mph most of the way. Settled on the return journey to 28.8mpg.

Never seen those figures on the V8 before. Gained around 2-3mpg....

Mine is remapped for info too.

Full car return trip of 460miles this weekend got 26.4mpg at 70mph (plus 10 percent. ...!) Where normally same journey got 23.

Can't complain for £90 on the Terraclean 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE
