Also don't worry about buying chains, again I never ever got asked whether I had any, and yes all my cars that I had out here were uk registered. Just drive out there like any old journey and don,t worry about it! If you have a look what most locals drive you will yourself, seeing that a rrs has abs, terrain response , dsc, etc etc! Pps my brother came out 3 years ago in a Porsche 911s in January with no snow tyres or chains etc . Still got up the mountain and back down again in some pretty crappy weather!

Were off to Les deux Alpes,, last time i was there was 20 Yrs ago, one thing i loved about this place was being able to ski out of the hotel and on to the lift system.,,, Just hoping the Glacier is still as good 20 yrs on.

The glacier is still in fine form, have a great time!

Exactly, only ever happened to us once, we got to the bottom of the mountain late a night, snow was falling heavily and the sweepers were elsewhere so the police blocked the road and only allowed cars fitted with chains up the mountain.

You can take you chances and 99% of the time you'll be fine. But on that occasion I was much happier driving up the mountain with chains, on my way to a warm chalet than spending the night in the car waiting for the road to clear.

Just thought i would update, now i am back,

We had moderate snow in the Village and some ice and light snow on the mountain road,,, The RRS was fantastic even with its standard tyres,,, Even tried a little off road in deeper snow and again noo problems

Never needed the snow chains

Local Police wernt at all interested in us,

I was totaly surprised to see just how little there were 4x4s up in the mountains,,, Most cars were small french hatches that looked to have no winter provisions at all.

Every time we used the RRs in the resort people would stop and glare, point, smile, Like they had never seen one before,, it was very odd

- Tag for tolls - Personal preference, not everyone agrees with me here, but travelling during holidays, weekends (when most ski travel occurs) and with 3 snoring passengers is a lot easier with a tag for the payage. I have a Sanef one which worked fine in my 911, but this is will be the first trip with it in the RRS. Charges are billed in the UK @ the standard toll rates. there is a 30Euro setup charge (20 is refundable if you return it). You also get to play the "will it or won't it" game with the 30kmh auto lane, which is nearly as much witchcraft as using adaptive cruise control in a RRS for the first time.
- Big bag of euros for the speeding fines and for any damage you do when you inevitably take the RRS up and down a blue run on the last morning .....well it would be rude not to and it's not like you will have a ski pass activated on the last morning anyway


Hope the above helps....and if you see a black RRS with a guy wearing a high vis vest blowing into several breathalysers doing 30.5KMH at the 30KMH payage barrier (it might just work)....wave because that will be me...fingers crossed

I love ours, we were making just as good progress in our defender coming back from the south of france as everybody else without one. They'd pass us on the motorway as we struggled to pull 70mph, and we'd catch them all at the toll station and sail past them

You also get a few incredulous looks from people who assume you're being a smart-a**e trying to queue jump only to realise you can get through the automatic toll even with a GB plate

Just thought I'd add a little to this thread having recently returned from the French Alps. I had everything with me that I thought was required-snowchains, breathalyzers, hi-vis jackets etc. Drove 1600 miles in 8 days and not stopped once by the police. In fact as we drove on the Toll roads, (using SANEF-T Transponder) we saw very little police at all! The roads near the resort had quite a bit of snow in places but not enough to require the fitment of the snow chains. The RRS performed brilliantly and was a total pleasure to drive on such a long trip! I just wish the diesel costs wasn't as high

We've just returned from Spain (no snow chains needed ) and we too opted for the Tag for the French portion. Having driven many times before, the tag made a big difference as the passenger could enjoy a good kip. Shame it doesn't yet cover Spain - that would be perfect.

The first toll is always the most worrying and I found I had to get quite close to the barrier before I heard the sweet beep sound. There were ones you could roll through at 30KMH.

You place the tag in the mottled area behind the rear view mirror.
