Fridge for the boot?

Bit of an oddball question, but does anyone know of a portable camping fridge that would fit nicely in the boot and allow the boot cover to still be pulled closed?

Ideally a fridge with an opening door rather than a lid. 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG

Loads of expedition fridges of different sizes, have a look there.

Do you need a fridge or cooler? Cooler for the boot is an accessory from LR for example Mike

I want to keep food such as meat fresh, so I guess a fridge is what is required.

Is 'Expedition' the make? I'll take a look, as well as looking at the LR offering Thumbs Up 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG

England 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Lux Orkney Grey

I use a waeco coolfreeze cf35. It's a mains/12volt cooler or freezer, depending how cold you set it. It's silent, sits in the boot area and works brilliantly as a freezer in outside temp. of to 40 deg. I did have a dometic combicool, but the compessor fitted inside it usede to rattle and clang going over bumps in the road. I have got a land rover cooler box but considering it's size, it is very limited as to what you can get in it, plus the fan is noisy.

regards
p

The LR one is more of a portable cooler bag as mse says.
I doubt you'd be able to keep meats etc in it for any prolonged periods to be honest. Neutral ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I'm only talking 2-4days for long weekend trips, BBQ/Fry-up type food.

Just looked at the LR cooler bag, looks too small and low tech in comparison to what I had in mind.

I'll look into the Waeco type Thumbs Up 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG

Will do thanks Thumbs Up
I also need to consider how much drain they will have on the battery if the car is stationary for several days whilst its plugged in Question 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG

Any fridge capable of keeping meat fresh for 2-4 days without running the engine will drain the battery to a point where the car won't start.
The Engal fridges are one of the best on the market for power consumption but it will still draw around 3-4 amps to maintain 2-3 degrees C temps needed for meat.

If you are driving alot of the time to campsites etc then parking up over night with the fridge running it won't be a problem. The Weaco's are a good fridge but they cycle more often than the Engals due to their poorer insulation and less efficient compressor.

Dont contemplate these cooler box's with cool or warm settings...they drain more juice than they are worth plus they arn't fridges anyway! Ra-Ro Sport Super Dooper Charged.

As per the above - expedition type units are the type rather than a brand...Ive had Waeco and it was a good unit - equally Engel. ARB also do one eg: http://www.lrsshop.co.uk/category/catalogu...es/fridges which my friend has in the back of his 110 24/7

Personally whenever i had had a fridge (or any product running continuously) I've had a dual battery system - there is never a good time to be without your main battery to start the car, so to isolate it when parked is a great idea Mike

I use an engel MT45 which is a great fridge. Can also be used as a freezer.
Runs 12v or 240v. Very low current draw of around 2 amps.

These halfords type coolboxes will draw about 10-12 amps and your battery will be flat in less than one night.
Your car has space under the bonnet for another battery, the most popular being the Optima YellowTop d34.

You need a split charge system which could be a very basic system or more intelligent such as the traxide Tronics split charge (which is what I use).

I can run a full weekend without moving and still start on the Sunday afternoon.
If I was buying again for low power usage I would choose in this order

Engel - very low power usage
ARB - slightly higher power, but more insulated body
Waeco - more like an engel
Hope that helps

Btw, when the engel isnt in the car, its often used as a beer cooler in teh house as it does a great job of cooling everything down very quickly. Bodsys Brake Bible

OK, very useful information, so thanks all Thumbs Up

The particular trip away I plan to use the fridge for is not until the end of August, so I've got time to save up for a fridge if I want to buy one, however I note that Engel offer a hire service - which could be perfect! 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG
