Posting Items For Sale BEWARE

Ive taken this from another site which might be of intrest and save someone from losing their pride & joy, this is just an example of someone selling his motor bike and it could quite easily be someones Sport etc. Shocked

Advice about taking photos of your bike / car with a phone and posting it .....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rather worrying and worth checking methinks ......

Copied from KTM forum,
You may know about this you may not, worth posting for those that don't !

BEWARE...Posting Smartphone Photos of Bikes/cars etc etc
A very kind subscriber to this forum telephoned me and warned me about the danger of posting photos of your bike (whether selling or not) online that have been taken with a smartphone....At the time my bikes photos were on the classified pages as I am selling my KTM SMT.

Basically, if you use a smartphone, the picture will have GPS location data embedded, the time you took the photo and the type of smartphone used!!! All a Pikey thief needs to do is open a website (removed as pikey scumbags might read this)

Right click the bike's photo, copy the URL onto the webpage and Bish Bash Bosh - he has the Lat/Long GPS data for your house. It even loads a google satellite image.

The bloke who gave me the steer had two bikes stolen and could not work out how they got his address. He eventually found out this information and realised he had taken the photo outside his garage with a smartphone.

So beware everyone. The scumbags are smarter that they used to be.

Mods - perhaps this should be a sticky?

I realised this when I copied a photo from a forum of a shotgun, then looking on my iPhone Under photo places I noticed a pin on the map down south, clicked the pin and they were the shotgun photos, right down to the address

Never happen again though on some other photos I've clicked and save though

Only if you have geotagging turned on, usually off by default. Mike

...or someone could simply call up the number on the advert and arrange a viewing at your address - which you'd give out willingly as you are selling the bike/car/whatever and come and steal it anyway??

Get a grip FFS.

I never give out my address when selling something, i always do it from my works address, some people arn't aware of such scams and i was only making people aware of the latest scams that are going on. Whistle So please retract your FFS comment.

I disagree and you miss the point if im honest...plus this doesnt apply with things like Ebay etc where they may glean your address before Mike

One of the first checks I would make would be to ensure the V5 matches where I was transacting the business so you would not be selling to me from your works address I'm afraid (unless of course it was a company car). I shall retract my FFS comment based on not geotagging a photo when you are not selling if it makes you happy.

Martin could add a bit of code into the image uploader to remove any GeoTag info from the image. They have it on other forums, such as SELOC RRS HSE TDV6 Autobiography

That would help on the forum if it can be done, (Martin) But still be aware when posting on other sites. Thumbs Up
