Kenya 2006 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Zambezi Silver
R R Sport Automatic Transmission Failure

On a long drive, my 06 model Sport came up with this error, (third time in last 2 months).

Automatic Transmission Failure
Limited Gears Available
Special Programs OFF
F code on dash

I stopped the car, switched off and started back up again, to get me home, some 300 kms away. I noticed the third gear was dragging and not changing in low rpm. It would change at usual 4200 rpm and gears 4 and 5 are fine.

I did a diagnostics to get following erros.

Inccorrect Gear Ratio
Invalid data received from Engine Control Module
Incorrect Data received from Transmission control module
Ride Height error

Once all erros were cleared, the car started to drive again as it should and gear 3 changed at low rpm.

I would like to cure this once and for all, and apreciate advise on what to do.
Is a gearbox oil / filter change advisable?

Thanks

I know in the past, similar members had this issue and these messages and it turned out to be either alternator not charging properly or poor battery.

Might be worth checking the charge rate of the alternator and then the battery to see how healthy it is.

If its the original Land Rover one, I would get a new battery, ideally from a main dealer as the cars are sensitive to what type, make etc you put in.

I hope it is something simple and inexpensive for you

Do you drive a lot in dusty conditions? I would always recommend a transmission fluid and filter change as a first step with any auto transmission. My past experience owning several vehicles is that a full fluid and filter change can fix many problems.

I am not familiar with the RRS transmission from a mechanics point of view but I know with some cars its important to make sure the transmission fluid is completely emptied and replaced with the correct amount specified, otherwise it may just be the torque converter section which is drained.
