Fuel choice...Diesel vs Premium Diesel

Hi Guys,

As the subject suggests, i just wanted to get your thoughts on this.

I have been using Shell V-Power & BP Optimax petrol in my Z4 for years and really noticed a marked difference in performance, sound and economy. What do people here feel about the diesel versions?

Sorry if this has been covered before, but being a noob i couldn't find a comprehensive debate!

Cheers,

Rich Now

Agreed the premium petrol gives better gains in performance and economy with performance engines, in diesels it's much less apparent, maybe smoother running and mpg, but that's it RRS gone

I treated mine to a tank of Shell V Power the other day - well it is Christmas. Very Happy

Initially I only used 'premium' brands but slowly switched (over about 6 months) to supermarket fuels, more for convienience as we have a Sainsbury's round the corner. I can't say I've noticed any difference but I didn't get an RRS for economy so never check the MPG. I do give it the occassional tank of V Power as I sort of think I should but will be interested to see what others do.

Next planned visit to shell will be Easter Very Happy

Richard

Fifth Gear proved a small incresae in power: (a mercifully short clip here)

Always use BP Ultimate myself but am more interested in the cleaner burning and better lubricating properties which should have a great benefit over time on engine health. Definitely avoid supermarket fuels ever since a friend who started working for a company that sells cheap fuels told me that they will "put any old Censored in it".
And of course there is never a queue at the premium pumps - makes me feel special Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Ive only ever put shell fuel in my new sport from 4 miles on the clock, does it make a difference Question ive no idea, but seen as your engine is the heart of your car i thought i would look after it properly.

I'm on my 4th consecutive tank of vmax and I've not noticed any significant power gains to be honest...I have noticed less smoke though...

The only time I noticed any real change was in the summer when I tried a few tanks of none premium fuel and added 2 stroke oil to it..it was definitely much much quieter and felt a little punchier.

Any body else using 2 stroke ?

I only stopped adding 2 stroke after various threads discussing it seemed to dry up...I'm not aware of any ill effects of using it but decided not to as I was a little unsure as to what any long term effects might be.

Yep, been using 2 stroke in mine for a few weeks now. It is a lot quieter now and it feels a bit smoother to drive. Looking to get mine remapped at some point next year. Thumbs Up 2014 L405 SDV8 RR Autobiography Cool

Fuel choice

Did some work with a fuel distribution company a few years ago who ran the fuel tankers to the branded as well as the supermarket fuel stations. I was told, and witnessed , that the same fuel is tankered to both, the difference is that the proprietary brands get a bucket full of detergents and additives (lubricants) added to the tanker which helps the longevity of the engines?
I am a chemist by profession so understand the theory/ principles employed, not sure of the real effect but it has always stuck with me and I always use Shell fuels but I don't think that the V Power makes any difference in the. Diesels Confused Happy to be proved wrong Whistle

Have done a lot of R and D on petrol but none on diesel. All scientific and with the same rolling road.
My B7 RS4 was normally aspirated V8 and gained nothing from normal unleaded right through to BP 102 pumped race fuel. My B5 RS4 is V6 twin turbo and gained 8 bhp between tesco 99 and BP 102. My 996 turbo won't run on normal unleaded without missing and spluttering under load. On shell v- power or tesco 99 it is happy and delivers its 600 plus horses.
In the Sport, I did notice a difference between Asda low sulphur and branded fuel, not in performance but in distance travelled. On asda fuel I get @ 45-50 miles less of range. Call me a cynic, been called worse, but at 5-7p a litre difference, I see no benefit from using plus fuels in diesels unless you aren't paying for the fuel out of own pocket. 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀
TDV8 Sport HSE...... Gone. Loved it but it didn't love me!!
Now rolling in MY10 Fullfat TDV8 Vogue. Slammed it to go round corners🙈
Cruising daily #56 mph in a Volvo V8. 😱
Lots of other toys in the cupboard...😜

Agree with Alan61, there are different mixes for customers, but the base fuel is exactly the same, it's just the blending once it hits the UK tanking stage that are different. Additives and lubricants I'm sure can make a difference over a prolonged period (best not open up that debate for earlier in the year about TSL Whistle Laughing ) but I think personally I never keep my cars long enough to care about this. It not like someone will pay me extra or I'll get extra on trade in just because I've used Ultimate of V-max, so, cheapest local Diesel all the way for me Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

First gear did a show on this topic, to test if different grade fuel affected the performance of the engine. They tested standard supermarkets' fuel as well the premium brands. And guess what, they showed that premium fuel can add up to 8HP unlike the supermarkets' fuel. I thought it was a very informative show. Thumbs Up Vadim A.
