I keep an excel spreadsheet record of every drop of fuel that goes into my Sport and I have just completed the first page and nearly 1 year of ownership.

The figures are
Miles run since delivery = 11567
Fuel burned from 11th June 2005 to 31 May 2006 = 393 gallons
Total Cost of Fuel = £1680.62
Total Average Miles Per Gallon = 29.44mpg


For my TD6 RR over a similar period
Miles run from 30-05-03 to 14-06-04 = 8752miles
Fuel Burned = 355gallons
Cost of Fuel = £ 939.26
Total Average Miles per Gallon =24.7mpg

The TD6 was less powerful, straight 6 hauling a lighter but less aerodynamic body around.

The most recent tank full of diesel that went into the TDv6 has worked out at 30.77mpg.

In the year with the RRS the worst tankful gave 22.6mpg while on holiday in Tiree last Novmeber with lots of short runs and stop/start running and towing a trailer. The best tankful so far has been 31.7mpg running from Solihull to Stirling in April this year. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

To be honest I would have expected that you'd have got a higher mileage out of the L322 -- just goes to show you how wrong I can be

Pretty good going with the RRS then. I was lucky to get 22mpg out of the V6 Freelander and even then I had to be going downhill with a tail wind It was appalling  Bill

Bill, RRS is heavier but considerably more aerodynamic, but it also has a very long 6th gear that it will slide into from about 55mph and hold onto down to about about 45 before dropping back into 5th, the RR didn't have a 6th cog in it's gearbox. RRS is turning about 1900rpm at 70mph, the FFRR was turning something like 2400rpm at 70 if I remember. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

18.5mpg from s/c, and that's running in at less than 3,000rpm! RRS 4.2 S/C. Zermatt. Tints. Stormers. 150+ paint defects, wonkey bonnet, scratches, detached doorseal. suspension faults. To sum it up, a �60k pile of cr4p!

FYI, I averaged around 27mpg over 12k in my old VW Touareg (2.5tdi R5 Diesel).

That makes very interesting reading. I don't calculate mpg, just take the lazy route and rely on trip computer.

I try to remember to reset it everytime i fill up.

We seem to be consistantly between 26 - 27mpg.

Super, you want to know what I got in my TVR 18 years ago................... I can dig that out from somewhere!
For some reason I have not kept up the records for the Defender, they stop last year after recording the stats for 3 years. It seems to get between 22 and 25 mpg regardless of how I drive it and that falls to 18-19mpg when running in low box all day offroad. It's a bit pointless continuing to record them as the car only does about 2000 miles a year and the other costs generally dwarf the cost of putting fuel into it! Last time I worked out the cost per mile over a year of running, the Def had cost something like £5 a mile to keep on the road that year after taking all the running costs into account! That year it had £2700 of mechanical repairs................................. but it was great fun incurring the expense.

BTW, when you get to Cyprus, have you thought about getting an old Series Land Rover or Series 1 Discovery as your 2nd car? There are 1000's of them over there, all retired from the Army and Air Force and they may not be the fastest, flashest car on the roads but they are very cheap to get parts for and will give you a great deal of fun and the ablity to go to places that you would love to take your RRS to but risk scratching those expensive Stormers.
More importantly they can be repaired by blacksmith if necessary, with out recourse to electronic diagnostics and expensive bodyshops............ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Decision is already made for car 2 I'm afraid. Lovely car but useless off road!

Decided on a RX-8 as I've had it confirmed that it is classed as a 1300cc over there!

I've heard this too but the deals on them over there are very good due to the duty a max of CY£500 (RRS TDV6 CY£21,000!)

You're supposed to check oil every other fill up due to the rotor tip wear on previous generation (Stop that tittering at the back!)

I think this is more a preventative thing so that if you don't check oil, runs low and damage occurs Mazda can wash their hands of the horrendous rebuild costs.

Still, I really fell in love with this car when I saw the prototype model years ago and still turns my head now. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award
