I just came across this website and read about the "diagnostic tool".

They say that ".... is an essential tool for Land Rovers and it is the electronic equivalent of a spare tyre – it will help you to identify problems quickly and accurately so you can initiate an immediate fix to keep the vehicle on the road"

Should I have one with me in the car?

If you are handy with a spanner and have a boot fully of spare parts, I coud see a use for it, to get you mobile again

If not, or your boot is full with golf clubs then won't the garage ID the fault if it breaks down and you have £250 in your pocket still

They would say its an essential tool to have in your car because they are trying to sell it to you

I have a Scangauge II that I've had for a few years now.

It's great for giving you an idea of where to look in case you have a fault. It throws up a code an a quick search of google reveals what type of fault you have.

It can also be used as an electronic gauge when the vehicle is running, I have mine semi permanently plugged in and when on the go I have engine temp, voltage, speed and rpm displayed.

It was useful for me when my 5 series cooling fan started to fail as the electronic gauge was rising to over 100 Celsius whereas the vehicles temp gauge was bang on middle. That's how I knew something wasn't right.

It will also clear any engine management lights that are illuminated

So this means that I do NOT need one

When you need it you will really need it...eg if its Sunday night and your stranded

But actually you will probably have little need for it and it will add little value Mike
