Has anyone got this problem, my front wheels keep getting filthy. No matter what the weather is like the wheels end up getting a dark grey residue on them. The rear two are fine it is always the front two?????????  Spud

Ok, no question is stupid...so I'll assume it's sincere.

It's brake dust...rears don't work as hard, all cars do it - sealing them makes it less obvious and easier to clean Mike

What do you use to seal the wheels and where do you gettit from

Also changing the front brake pads may help, a previous owner might of put some cheap pads in before he/she sold the car on. How long have you had the motor? Some pads give off more dust than others, but agree with the comments above. Do you use tyre gel on your tyres?

Had the car a year, pads were changed just before I got it for the last MOT. I don't use gel but do have laquer that I will put on the alloys at the weekend. I have had an X5, 350Z and never had this bad a problem before, I may change the pads too just in case as it looks terrible after a couple of weeks. Thanks. Spud

After a couple of weeks There lies the problem........ You need to wash your car more often My guess is its got cheap brake pads in.

Silly question but have u checked you've still got the brake shields fitted behind the disc? Some people remove them and that may cause more muck flying round, also as Ady says cheap brake pads cud b the problem Java black 2006

Cheap pads will definitely do it, doubt there's a mechanical problem (like brake binding) but always worth a check.

After you clean the wheels with an alloy wheel cleaner, a good wheel sealer will ensure they stay cleaner for longer and wash off quicker (including in the rain!). Autoglym is as good as any...think of it like polishing you wheels  Mike

I have an X5, new car, no cheap pads and the front wheels are always filthy, and it hardly rains here!

swmbo has a mini and it is a nightmare - far worse than the RRS for brake dust

Also impossible to clean rims without taking off the wheels
