I think there's a difference between inhaling a bit from a balloon and fitting a mask to a tank of the stuff.I'd say the risks from the latter are much higher owing to the pressurised nature of the tank flow. Helium and oxygen are used in diving, for example. When you take a gulp from a balloon you're getting a mixed breath. Breath from a mask a few times and you're looking at lungs full of helium. Big difference. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I heard that on the radio earlier

my knowledge of liquid nitrogen is limited to say the least, but if you pour something that very very cold on to a drink would that not make it a lollipop, or does it have an effect like dry ice and you get a cold drink with a layer of mist

I think the idea is to get a "smokey" cold drink. Presumably in this case the girl's drink was either supercooled by the nitrogen or she drank it before the nitrogen had boiled off. Either way, I'm amazed she swallowed the drink if it was so cold that it would cause damage internally.

The terrible irony is that she was out celebrating her 18th birthday. It should have been a happily memorable event, not a near-death experience! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Apparently you're supposed to be warned to let the smoke clear before drinking.

Why the hell would you want to drink a smoking drink! Guess I'm getting old. Seems likes crap idea.

I guess in the heat of the moment on a 18th Birthday her friends might have been egging her on to down all the drinks they were buying her, so didn't wait for the drink to warm up and stop smoking.

We all do it or have done it, at one time or another, in many different ways

I got lumbered in a short pink nighty on a night out on my stag do, with nothing more than a pair of boxer shorts and trainers to keep me warm and modest, not too bad in spain, but the fact i was -4c weather in the french alps was not the best, my mates think its funny, watching me freeze trudging through the snow. the fact i got so drunk with those "warming" sambuca they bought and got lost on the way back to the chalet was not a funny moment for me and could have ended differently as i didn't have a key to get in the chalet when i eventually found it and had to sit waiting for them to turn up freezing my knackers off, funnily enough wearing a bin liner covered in old food i must have found, emptied and made a poncho out of for a bit of warmth and shelter
