RRS Detachable Multi Height Tow Bar Question....

Hi
I have the above tow bar (as well as the standard one which i use for towing my caravan) and have mounted a motocross bike carrier to it. Now to me, it looks as strong as the other, but it came with two stabiliser bars that mount to the chassis. Do i really need to use these whilst carrying a 90kg bike on the back?

This is what i am using http://www.davecooper.co.uk/motorbike_racks.asp . any thoughts/experience on this matter? I can't see why the two bars are needed when the tow bar sits tight in the slot.

Cheers,

Yes the multi-height towbar is not detachable it only shares that mounting (saves inventing a new top mounting) - you must have the side bars fitted

If you didnt you would be in serious trouble at a VOSA checkpoint or in the event of an accident as the multi-height will only be certified with the cross bars on as soon as they find that out you are screwed Mike

Thanks Mike, I will buy a couple of bolts and use the bars. It just looks ugly on the back, suppose for the odd time I use it I can undo them.

I agree they dont look the best hanging there - but there are there for a reason!

Probably some forces on the lower part of the plate exceeded some spec on the top mounting or needed bracing as too much flex was observed...safest all round to fit the bars, could you find some form of 8.8 split pin Mike
