Last weekend the parking brake made a dreadful noise when I tried to release it and failed to disengage. Quite an experience. Manual EPB release performed. Spoke to the service manager while dropping the car at LPR on Monday about possible causes. Two things that came up were: 1. Have you been offroading? Yes, a week before the problem. 2. Have you had any work done on the brakes? Yes, bought genuine rear brake pads and sensor from Duckworths and got them fitted by an independent at least a month ago. The indie said because the discs weren't removed, apparently there was no need to adjust the parking brake. The EPB had been functioning just fine after both events without any unexpected noise or warnings.

Got a call today telling me a brake shoe has collapsed into the disc and they can see the pieces in there Now the shoes and discs (but not pads as they are almost new) need to be replaced at a cost of £590+ and they won't even try claiming on approved warranty as shoes/discs are wear & tear items. They didn't say it was caused by offroading or the independent garage fitted the pads incorrectly or something but suggested if LPR had replaced the pads, they would have done a health check on the shoes too.

My question is, the fact that the shoe wasn't just worn but was disintegrated, shouldn't that give any grounds for a warranty claim? Also, is £590 to replace rear discs and brake shoes a reasonable price?

I've already sent James a PM but wanted to get members' thoughts as well in case someone has experienced the same.

Nice try its a consumable part, if you run it for long enough it will destroy its self.

Parking brake is a bone of contention for most RRS owners who have had issues, me included.

Its a fine line - i have had previous brake systems replaced under warranty - just to say they are a consumable item doesn't absolve them from faults Mike

Agreed Ive had faulty calipers etc replaced but running a consumable part till is disntegrates itsnt the manufacturers fault If its within the life of the part then I agree fully. Warranty cliams on consumable parts are few and far between.

Out of interest fkarim do you have the LR MOT insurance?

No - but to blanketly say its a consumable part is the consumers fault either

Yes, the LR Approved warranty I've got includes MOT insurance which does cover these parts. However, the car wasn't being MOT tested this time. After last 2 visits (service and MOT test 3-4 months ago and compressor replacement under warranty 2 months ago) the advice given on both occasions was only about replacing brake pads which I followed. Don't think I've done that many miles since these visits.

Latest update from the dealership is that the cause is excessive build up of muck and grime which accelerated the wear on the shoes, leading to break up. Probably a punishment for taking it offroad a week before this happened. Although I did get it washed properly underneath, wheels & arches, discs and everything afterwards and would have thought a capable 4x4 would survive a bit of non-extreme fun. There I was thinking I haven't done any damage apart from scratching the wheels a little bit

Think the best resolution I can now hope for is a forum discount on parts & labour ... waiting for David to return from his meeting and look at what he can offer.

All cars, that use brakes as part of the off road capability systems (eg Terrain response etc), hammer the brake pads - the mud is abrasive - makes it like sandpaper on the disks and the systems and you use the brakes a lot.

Occasional use wont kill them nor will normal use, it just accelerates the damage (and increases the wear depending on how much off roading etc is done)

Only offroaded once for 2-3 hours total. By the way it's not the discs or pads that failed, it's the shoes.

You could have a chat with the guys who did the disks and pads but suspect they will just claim you didnt ask them to check. Hopefully LPR with sort you out mate

LPR offered a discount, work carried out and car returned last night. All looks good. Thanks Wayne, David and James

Would have had to change the discs and shoes at some point anyway. This is a regular maintenance cost really ... unless one has a Warranty Direct/Warranty Wise policy but then they've got their own problems I hear.

I do miss the MY12 Autobiography Sport that LR Assistance provided though
