Which RRS?

Hi guys and gals,

I happened across this site by chance and I am very grateful that I did. The little that I have had a chance to read so far has been very useful!
In short I am desperate to buy a RRS, i am just having a little difficulty narrowing down which one? My price bracket automatically takes the later 3.0 TD out of the equation. So its either the petrol super charged or one of the TDs. I am probably leaning towards the diesel as i do a fair bit of commuting to and from work. Is the 3.6 worth the extra cost compared to the 2.7? How comes all of the 3.6 TD models that I have found have very high mileage (when compared to a similarly aged 2.7) ? On that note, what would be an acceptable mileage for a 2007 3.6TD? And at what stage do major repairs begin to creep in??

Apologies for all the novice questions, however, I am fairly new to the LR world (a recent bmw convert) and there's only so much you can learn from just reading off of the internet!

Thanks in advance for all your help / advice

Cheers

Graham

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Orkney Grey

Buy a Touareg: it's cheaper to buy, faster, handles better, is cheaper to run, more reliable and definitely more frugal with fuel. It's not quite as good off road but then most 4x4 never go off road anyway.

Right, having got the correct advice out of the way, my 57 plate TDV8 has 59k miles on it. It's had a new battery, a new alternator, new starter motor, new anti roll bar bushes and a new rear hydraulic anti roll bar. All in the last 12 months. All, except the battery, covered by warranty. The failed rear heated windscreen wasn't covered by warranty.

Look through this forum and you will see that my list isn't unusual (although each car seems to have its own list of issues).

Someone will doubtless come along and tell you how they've had several RRS and all have been faultless but they're probably not talking about 5-6yo examples.

The most important piece of advice is: get a decent warranty. It's not an option, it's essential. It's on the same "must have" list as insurance and road tax. Sure, you can drive one without a warranty but when they break they're expensive to fix. And it will break.

You mention price bracket. What is your price bracket? How much can you afford per month to run the thing once you've bought it? You'll get low 20s mpg. Sure, some will claim they see 30mpg from a TDV8 but only on long runs when being driven by the Pope on sedatives. I saw 28mpg once on a long and very slow run up to Scotland. Drive it as it wants to be driven on A and B roads and you'll see 20-22mpg. Sensible daily driving might see 25mpg.

You're currently looking at £100+ per tankful of fuel, £465 pa road tax, £600 per service (at a LR garage, less at a decent indie) with services at 15k miles or 12 months (whichever comes first), insurance is several hundred pounds a year depending on age etc. etc. etc. Tyres are £200+ / corner for something half decent on 20 inch rims.

Lots of RRS have been "improved" with bigger wheels and lots of little, but apparently important, cosmetic changes. These might affect warranty claims and are all, obviously, an issue of personal taste. Finding a standard RRS, if that's your thing, will be challenging but probably rewarding. It will certainly be much more individual than the usual "pimp my ride" stuff.

As to which version to get? Do you want a slow cruiser or something with a bit of grunt? 2.7 for the former, 3.6 for the latter. Money no object? Get the S/C and enjoy real performance with fuel bills to match. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black

RRSTDV8 speaks the truth. I had nearly identical stuff fail on a 57 plate TDV8. I got my rear screen paid for, can't quite remember how now, it was something odd like the boot switch wouldn't work and the wire for it went through the screen (which happened to be bust too!).

Get. A. Warranty.

(a good one, like "official" LR extended)

Thumbs Up ============
2010 TDV8 HSE - ooo laa laaaaaaaaa
2007 TDV8 HSE - superb car and very reliable
============
2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8!

I see they both happened on 57 plates, did the 2008 and 2009 models get any revisions to be more reliable?

One way to look at it is that a previous owner probably has gone through the pain already and had things fixed during their ownership Wink

Im looking at one that has just had its 60,000 miles main service done by Land Rover, What does that service consist of?

I have an 08 TDV8 - 55k miles, not had it a year yet, but again suspension bushes & a split turbo hose but that's about it.

Average 25 mpg on short commute, late 20's early 30's on a longer distance

Superb acceleration & cruises at ***mph with ease all day, obviously on the german autobahn's

Trade in value circa £24k retail £28k

Hope that helps Paul

How much are the suspension bushes to get done as these seem very common?

They're a couple of hundred per axle I think. I'll try to remember to dig out my paperwork and see what value was put down for the warranty. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
