Just bought an entry level DSLR Nikon D3100

Nick, when & wherabouts are you planning a photography trip to the lakes?

thinking on getting a canon 650d eos myself any comemnts on it ?

I'd ask somewhere else by the looks of it this is a NIKON ZONE

650D is a good camera
Go into a shop and compare the 650d with a 60d, just so you can see the differences and feel the weight. If you plan to put any long lenses >300mm on, then I'd recommend the 60D.  ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Nice RRS now that I've been nice to you, I hope you won't mind the photography critique

The sky is a little (lot) washed out or over-exposed, could have been improved with a Neutral Density (ND) filter to lower exposure in the top half of the picture and avoid burn out which you can't do in Photoshop. Or experiment with HDR so you can get a wider exposure range in one picture if you like the end result.

You should be able to see clouds, blue, grey... something, not a white sky unless a nuclear explosion happened nearby at the time

Don't know how much photography experience you have, but I usually under-expose my shots by as much as 1 stop with digital, you can bring back detail in dark areas (underexposed) with image editing, but burnt out/over exposed areas are lost for ever, nothing will ever bring them back.

PS: Does you camera shoot RAW ? Well worth switching to RAW if you're currently shooting in JPEG.

+1 for shooting in RAW, you can salvage blown out areas 99% of the time or you can do a split raw conversion in photoshop (1 exposure for the sky and 1 for the foreground etc) and then combine the 2 to produce a balanced image
