My son is 6 years into private education (started at pre school) and I don't begrudge a penny.

Unless he gets into the one very good grammar school near us, I'll continue until he leaves FT education.

Nice one! I'm thinking of framing this term's one for child #1 - 2 scholarships = 40% discount, and hence the smallest one for 5 years. Enough to cover the laptop I'd blithely offered as a reward for achieving such...
Friend's child is joining Winchester as a scholar this term - discount a massive 0%!

What a self indulgent post - my heart bleeds Big Cry

It is your right and free choice how you spend your cash but you only have your own experiences - I've seen the output from both and while the private sector can boost a pupil's confidence it just as often turns out to be blind over-confidence and a lack of openness in learning and social skills. The proportion of privately educated youngsters taking 'funny stuff' is also, in my opinion, higher than those in 'normal' education.

Both my kids have great careers with degrees from reputable Universities in 'hard' science based subjects not mamby pamby stuff and they came through the State sector unscathed as honest responsible citizens like the overwhelming majority of their mates.

Never went to private school myself but I managed to get an engineering honours degree, a Master and a Doctorate. Have run businesses, headed a University department and lectured and examined for Universities in Europe, USA, Far East and been a consultant to some of the worlds largest organisations and corporations.

I've interviewed prospective students from around the world and there are loads of good intelligent motivated youngsters from the state sector - don't believe the trash written by the myopic London centric press about the UK's Schools. Yes there is some rubbish but there's loads of great teachers and schools as there is in the private sector - the rpivate sector can keep it under wraps as they are not exposed by the FoI.

Does private education automatically mean you're going to succeed? No, of course not. Does it give a better chance of success? Yes, it does.

Sure, some pupils in state education will do well but not as a consequence of them being in state education but rather as a consequence of them being driven (or pushed by parents - typical of Asian families). Private education tends to push pupils so they tend to get better results.

I was lucky enough to go to a private school (my Dad was in the Armed Forces and at the time we got assistance with school fees if based outside of the UK). Would I have done as well in the state system? No, I don't think I would have. I was a border so I was immersed in the school system and this helped to push me more than I would have been at home.

The reality is that, on average, a person who undertakes private education will do better than one who undertakes state education. Note that the key here is "on average"; some state people will do better but generally speaking the private sector will give a better long term result. The statistics show it time and again. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

You wait till they go to university, its not the cost of the course its the cost of keeping them away from home !!

Will never complain but sometimes a nice porsche on the drive would be preferable.
