KEY (singular)

On collecting our new RRS the owner handed me a key. I said "where is the other one"? Oh we only ever had one key... Difficult to do anything and the price seemed good so I had no option but to leave it.
So somewhere there is another key and when my good lady loses this one...
With the excellent help from this and the Disco 3 site it looks like I have only one option - order a new key (from Sturgess Leicester) and pay them to code the new key up and recode the old one.
So we then have a spare key and the missing key will no longer work.
Now it seems new key = £100 and coding labour = £50 + VAT = c £180??

Is there really no cheaper and reliable way? I see old keys occasionally on Ebay which would need a new blade and programming.

Would be grateful for any advice please!

Hello peanut
Adventure 4X4, order keys direct from landrover and program for free, so entire thing costs £120. The blade is pre cut by landrover so there is no messing.
The only issue is getting to leeds to order, need rrs to confirm it is your car and get the vin,
then a return journey to pick up key and program.

You may be able to find a specialist closer to home that provides the service

Hi Peanut,
Have you tried the dealer you bought your RRS from to see if they will give you a big discount as I would expect with such a luxury car, the dealer should always supply two keys. If it only had one when they got it, I would have pushed them to get another at their expense. It does not cost the dealer the same price, therefore I would push for them to pay or meet you half way.
Good luck

alot cheaper on ebay

pick up a new key with blank key around £10-30 depending on wining bid

make sure key has same frequency code on inside of key blank

go to timpsons the national key and shoe repairers they have a laser key cutter £ 7.50

then take both keys and car to main dealer keys and car all coded together £ 45.00

sorted

dont buy from ebay, they cant be added in am told

got mine with one key, dealer charged me £90 for another key, coded for free

good news is the original key you dont have will no longer start the car or disarm the alarm as all keys need to be present when a new key is added in if you want to use them

very long lead time on new keys, order it now before the good lady looses the one you have Labour of love

From reading the OP it looks like a private sale. I definately would not accept only one key from a dealer. Airwolf has the right idea, a bit of a faff but worth the saving and piece of mind. Thumbs Up

Second hand keys CANNOT be re-coded to another vehicle, they are one-time program only.

If you were lucky and bought a cheap new key then well done Cool Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

Only one key?........hmmmmmm........I would be more concerned that someone will simply drive it away in a couple of weeks time using the spare key that didn't come with the vehicle.

Many thanks all for the contributions.
It was bought privately so no real comeback.
Sounds like my best bet is a local independent who might charge a bit less for the programming. Leeds is a bit far at present but at least it has given me an idea.

Seem to be several outfits covering Leicester that claim to supply and re-code keys - I can't vouch for any of them though!

AFAIK, a dealer (or person with appropriate diagnostic kit) can "remove" keys from the ECU to prevent them being used to set/unset alarm & engine start; the blade would still obviously allow entry via passenger door and position 2 system check in the ignition barrel.
