Key Fob fault ???

Hi all, any advice on this one please?

Seems that the buttons on my second key fob will not operate. The key itself will start the car and driving is fine. I originally thought the internal key fob “rechargeable” battery might just need to be recharged having not been used for a while but after using it on a 100 mile plus trip, still no joy with operating the buttons. So, thoughts are…

Could the internal rechargeable battery have been dormant for too long and so now no longer accept a recharge ? - are these rechargeable batteries replaceable ?

Or, is it likely that I need to replace the complete fob and if so is this a main dealer only job or is it possible to get these replaced by independent autolock/key specialist ? - any recommendations ?

Many thanks in advance. Carl

hello,

I have exactly the same problem with mine...

My key started with the problem, gradually stopped working, then was intermittent now it doesnt work at all. Then literally 2 weeks later my wifes key did the same thing. It was like someone had came round and killed the keys!

I have used them on long journeys so I know that it isnt to do with re-charging the batteries. I have been told that the key fob batteries cannot be replaced.

I cant believe on mine that both keys are faulty, therefore I am assuming that it is something to do with the receiver in the car itself. Although I am struggling to locate it and it seems a real pain to get to.

Anyone else got any other ideas on what I could try for this problem?

Thanks

James

Carl,
It may be that your second fob hasn't had enough time to recharge- it is only an induction loop, so a low charging rate. Try attaching it to your other key with a rubber band and give it a week. If still no joy, the rechargeable battery is replaceable, but you'll need patience, soldering iron and possibly an oyster-shucking glove. Worth trying, as a battery is £3 whilst new key is £100+ and will require pairing.

James,
Didn't Bobby point you to checking the wiring splice in the door cill back in your last thread?

Hi,

Yes Bobby did point me in the direction of it but it still looks difficult to access and I am not sure I am confident of doing it myself.

You might want to get it sorted sooner rather than later, as you're running the risk of having an immobile vehicle. A good diagnostic technician and mobile service chap is Iain Lambert, who runs "Off Road Essentials" and is a D3 site sponsor. He's based in Derby, so convenient for you.

Thanks very much DrLex, I'll give that a try first. Carl
