It’s not about safety, it’s about revenue, make all the rural roads 40mph and everybody gets frustrated. Then when you come to a straight piece of road you’ll overtake, where do you think the camera van will be parked.. Just waiting for the money to roll in.
There’s a road here in Devon (A377) where it’s 60mph until you get to the only straight that you can overtake and the limit drops to 50mph half way along there’s a lay-by guess where the camera van is always parked.
If was really about safety they should make the roads fit for purpose. Martyn

A law that can't be properly enforced is a bad law. The proposal will result in a large number of reduced speed limits which, of course, won't be enforced because they won't be able to afford to do so. The result will be large numbers of people breaking the law.

Of course, the real issue is that once people get used to breaking reduced limits on ordinary roads, they will also, by habit, end up breaking the limit on roads which should have reduced limits. The likely outcome will be more serious accidents, not fewer. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
