Stolen to order - warning

Hi All. Here's the CCTV footage of my BMW 1M stolen without any keys in 3 minutes!
I know this isn't a BMW forum, but this is interesting for anyone with a high end car attractive to thieves or indeed anyone with this type of key.

This is my £43,000 BMW 1M Stolen at 3 am in under 3 minutes. They accessed the car's OBD port in the footwell by breaking the glass, reaching in and using a device to reprogram a blank key fob. The car was simply then unlocked and pushed off the drive and driven away. No Alarm went off, and later found out there is a 'void' on the inside of the car, so if you keep your arm close to the inside of the door and the dash, the alarm will not activate. Just enough room to get your arm down to the OBD port where you can re-program a blank key if you have the correct device (which you can buy in the internet!)

BMW don't seem to want to admit they have a problem on their cars. They are still producing cars with the OBD port located in the footwell in the same location, and I assume the same problem with the alarm. Over 300 cars were stolen in March 2012 in the West Midlands alone and apparently the Police told me in one night £250,000 worth of cars were stolen in the region.

Hi there, sorry to hear about you BMW being stolen, i pick this up off pistonheads on july 2nd and posted it on this site just to make people aware of whats going on in the world of car crime these days, the more aware we are the better, http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic27446.html, it seems that the midlands is the car crime hotspot and has been for many years Shocked Have you heard anything about your motor since it vanished? If bmw don't see this as a problem, then i'd move over to another marque, they don't deserve your money, Whistle Looks like the old disclock will be coming back into fashion for BMW drivers. i hope you don't end up too much out of pocket with these scumbags Mr. Green Good luck on the outcome.

Thanks, yeah I've switched to Porsche, and bought a Cayman. Thanks for being proactive and posting it on the site, I think all manufacturers need to take note and realise they can't cut corners with their cars.

Haven't heard anything about the car. By all accounts the Police aren't getting anywhere with their investigations and the thefts are continuing in the same numbers since mine went at the end of March. I imagine its in Japan or somewhere with RHD, i'd like to think its been wrecked or fallen off the container ship into the sea. It helps.

The other problem is, is that if they get caught, the punishment doesn't fit the crime Crying or Very sad Did yours have a tracker on it? Not that they are much good either with these guys knowing their way around them too.

No tracker. I didn't want it back after someone else had driven it. Wouldn't have felt the same.

Apparently if they break into your home for the key they get UP TO (Magic words) 7 years, stealing a car off the drive only a few months. If I went into a bank or Post office and stole £43,000 in cash i bet i'd get more than a few months

Absolutely shocking that BMW (and others) aren't looking to correct this issue. Shocked
Sorry it happened to you, but It's good that your spreading the word 'stolen1m' Thumbs Up

Sorry to hear about your car being stolen, I would be the same and not want it back either.

BTW, what did the insurance/police say when you provided them with the footage?

BC - if there is a weakness is the RRS, put you car in to valet mode each time you leave it, will make it that bit harder to take.

On mine (MY12) there is a 'valet' button on the touchscreen.
You press it and it locks the screen meaning the loss of use of various features of the car. Stops them seeing sat nav destinations etc.
Not sure it'll deter anyone though Confused ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I stops the boot (poss all door except driver) from being opened, also thought it set a MAX top speed - time for a test Smile

----

Edit: OK its dont work as I expected Sad from the manual. Seams stupid as the boot can be accessed from the top Exclamation

Valet mode allows the vehicle to be locked by a
parking attendant, without giving access to the
loadspace. Valet mode also prevents operation
of the touch screen, to prevent access to
telephone numbers or navigation addresses.

ok guys here is a simple but very effective tip, assuming your at home Smile

get a very good baby monitor/alarm, i have the baby bit wired in under the drvers seat, and the other end next to the bed, a window going in or talking would be enough to wake me.

one idea i never actually got round to doing would be a magnetic device that sticks to the car has a flashing led and connects to your intruder alarm via radio, again simple enough. If you took some fog and put it in a jar, would it be missed.

Sorry guys but why do you bother? If someone wants to steal your car they will do. I personally wouldn't want to get harmed in any way by stopping someone taking my car. Let them have it, insurance will cover up...
