Having one of those moments where I am coming up to 2 years of ownership of the RRS and thinking of changing it. When I bought it (4.2 RRS S/C) I instantly said that my next car would be another one, however toying with the idea of a change.

The Audi Q7 is at the top of the list of alternatives, as it and the rest of the Audi range continue to catch my eye on the road.

But, I love driving and owning the RRS, and don't want to feel that I have in some way taken a step down from it with a new car.

Anyone got any direct comparissons between the 2 cars? Offroad ability is not important - ability in snow would be about as rough as it would get.

RRS drives better and nicer than Q7.

Personally, I don't like Q7.

Better to rent a Q7 one for a week and you will realise that RRS is on TOP of Q7.

^^^ Have to agree with Jonny. I test drove one (3.0 TDI) before I got in the RRS, drives very well on the road, but just didn't offer (to me) anything different from the A6 I had. Yes, its a proper 7 seater so good in that regard, but it just didn't entice me to want one.  ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

A mate has one and to be honest I was underwelmed when I sat in it... RRS gone

We (wife and 2 young kids) had a 4.2TDI for a grand tour of all the family over Christmas a couple of years ago. We left London and travelled to Newcastle, Perthshire, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Sale and back to London. This was over a 2 week period and so we did lots of days trips as well.

All in all we covered significant motorway miles, plus plenty of A and B roads, generally in pretty treacherous conditions as the weather was poor.

To be honest, I had been looking forward to having it, but after 2 weeks of it, I knew that I could never own one. It's a colossal car, but doesn't seem to use the space well inside, it is a monstrosity to look at as well. It doesn't ride nearly as well as a RRS on any road, and when the surface is poor, or you get into anything approaching slippy conditions, it is hopeless. The weather was really bad that year, lots of snow and very cold and whilst I was expecting some confidence from the car, it was far worse than I could ever have expected. It did have normal summer tyres on, so I know that makes a massive difference, but I would say it was much worse than the MkV Golf GTI we had at the time, which was on performance rubber.

The power tailgate was rubbish when I was trying to pack the boot up, imagine the crap we had piled up on a trip like that over Christmas with a baby, pushchair, travelcot, presents etc. Every time I tried to close it, it would pop open again. Not sure if the new RRS does this too, but it was a real pain when I was packing it to the gunnels every couple of days. Small point, but an annoyance in real world situations.

It drank like a fish, I recall filling up in a remote petrol station in the borders late on a snowy evening on 27 December, with just a sniff of diesel left in the tank. I filled it up and went in to pay and the bill was well into 3 figures (I am now used to this after living with a RRS and a Disco, but it was a shock at the time). The guy behind the counter just looked open jawed and said "I thought you were filling up an aircraft carrier". I had to fill her up again the day after.

It was useful to have the extra seats, so I could ferry around parents, nephews and nieces, so on that front better than the RRS, but a Disco will do it.
I would say that both the RRS and the Disco beat it comfortably in pretty much any situation. Ride, ability, toys, looks, comfort etc etc.

And the image ............ eeeuuurrrggggghhh!

Stick with the RRS.

I was a loyal customer of Audi for 11 years with 14 purchases 12 of them being new and 3 being Q7's

The service from Audi nowadays is shocking, when I purchased my first Audi there was 5 models in the whole range, now there are countless A's, Q's and whatever else they do. As a result of cashing in on the “better class of repmobile image" they offer the sales and service support is without question completely: censored:. When something does go wrong with an Audi ( and in fairness it was rare) its always your fault. My albeit limited Land Rover experience has been very good, great sale with no hassle and on the one occasion thus far where we required using the service department, they done exactly, that provided a service NO IF's, NO BUT's they just sorted the problem and apologised for the inconvenience.

The Q7 is not a proper 4X4, and as a result even when they were fitted with the winter wheel & tyre package (at £2500 and look awful and take room up in your garage for 8 months of the year) you will struggle or will not manage to follow your mates in their Rangies up a hillside road that has some snow lying on it, and most of them don’t need an extra set of winter wheels & tyres to do that.

For me the change has been good, and I hate to say it but you do feel a little bit better driving a Range Rover. Yes the Audi has better build quality, but the RRS is a bit cheaper and now I have tried and like I will be buying another no doubt about that.

2006 took delivery of Phantom Black 3.0TDi S-Line. Q7 new to the market and the Audi range. Owned for approx. 1 year which took in a mild winter here in Scotland, the Q never missed a beat and the only complaint on the this car was excessive tyre wear that I was assure by my Audi dealer was a common problem being experienced on the Q7, however Audi were aware and working to resolve this issue.

2007 took delivery of Phantom Black 4.2TDI S-Line. Again the owning experience was marred by tyre and alignment issues that Audi now said was down to me or my wife’s driving styles and not as previously mentioned to be a design issue and poor service from the Audi dealerships on the issue did not help, and after 18 months of ownership we moved to a new S4 Avant.

2010 December, took delivery of Ibis White 3.0TDi S-Line 8sp-Tip. This being the latest revision of the Q range, revised engines and gearbox, stop/start tech, and tyre wear issue resolved with different OEM tyre selection etc. On the way home from collecting the Q there had been some snowfall and where we live there is a small hill to our home, the Q was unable to make it up. Obviously this was rather disappointing considering Audi heritage, however in fairness the Q7 was shod with 21" alloys which will hinder progress in winter conditions. Audi explained that they now offered a winter wheel (18") tyre option and with this being stuck would not be a problem combined with the latest quattro technology and as a loyal customer I would only be relived of £2000 instead of £2500 to make my Quattro Q7 all the way home in future. This was not to be the case and I watched stranded on a few occasions as friends with Range Rovers kept going where my Q7 had stopped.

Like I said on the previous posting Audi build quality & Engineering is second to none, but the Q7 is NO Range Rover when it comes to going through snow or mud and the Dealership experience is poor and getting worse.

the biggest problem i had with my Q7 was all 7 seats rattled when driving over bumps which was really a pain in the arse

my car was the 4.2 tdi a flying machine but just not a Range Rover
