On our ship's it's the midnight to 4in the morning slot........................ most deck officers hate it but it does have advantages like you never get disturbed by visitors on the bridge! It can be very creepy sometimes, I remember one sailor who wouldn't stand inside the wheelhouse because he was convinced there was a ghost in there (most Asiatic seaman are very respectful of ghosts!) because of an erie greenish glow in the corner.......................................
Turned out to be one of those photoluminescent emergency signs glowing, but somebody had hung a flag to dry on the coat hook above it obscuring the icon!
Personnally I prefered the morning/ evening watches when I was a watchkeeper (0400-0800 and 1600 to 2000), always nice and quiet and I saw some magic sunsets/sunrises over the years. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Wow Tim! That almost brings a tear to my eye!

Seriously, that sounds very cool! Cool A far more interesting choice of career than most of us I'm sure!

I would imagine it can be difficult to be away from home for such long periods of time.

I have always dreamed of going to the Antarctic.......... have "done" Greenland on a containership. I haven't yet been to India, but have been to Bangladesh to deliberately drive an 85000 tonnes ship up the beach at full speed (that was an unmissable experience having spent all my working life trying to avoid doing just that!) and it was an anticlimax as we didn't even feel the bump, it just slid up the mud at 30mph and stopped, then we let the anchors go to stop it sliding back into the river when the tide came in!
Places I would rather not go back to................ not many but Brazil, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and most of the countries in West & East Africa would be at the top of the list. Reason is CORRUPTION and not because of anything else. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Even a D3 could beat the 0-30mph in 9000 secs (or 2.5 hours!), despite having 2x56000hp engines. Stopping would be easier in a D3 too. Laughing 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I've been to the Falklands and South Georgia, in both summer and winter months. South Georgia has some breathtaking scenery. I have also been up the other end, and the scenery looks the same apart from no polar bears down south.

I always wanted to go States side but the closest I got was the West Indies. Like Tim I don't think I would like to go back to Sri Lanka or India. There were a few eye opening sights out there . . . Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. The States is a fantastic place to visit. I have been to most of the major seaports on both coasts and the Gulf of Mexico, but if I were going back for a holiday (have been 3 times on holiday!) again then order of "favouriteness" would be Washington State, Oregon and California (in the summer although they are also staggeringly beautiful in the winter), Maryland,Delaware and Virginia (also nice summer and autumn destinations and if you like sailing the Chesapeake is a vast "inland" sea with great sailing waters), New England corner in the north east (winter and Autumn/Fall). The best holiday I did there was 45 days travelling round the entire country (well I stuck to the borders and coasts!) on the AMTRAK rail network, definately the nicest way to see the country while travelling, and the stations in the big cities are amazing buildings, much nicer than airport lounges too. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I'd like to take the family over for a holiday, but the dustbin lids would only want Florida for the obvious attractions.

I might wait a few years until they have flown the nest and then do a more relaxing scenic break for just me and the Dragon. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Just remind them that while they are on school holidays Florida is a cheap destination because of the 3 H's........................ way too hot, way too humid and it's HURRICANE season. No American (other than Florida residents) goes there between June and November. Anyway there are Disneyland type attractions in most states now.

In my opinion the best Stateside holiday for kids during our school hols would be fly to San Diego and rent a car to drive Route 1 - the Pacific Highway to Seattle. You can stop at all the major sights and cities and do Disneyworld at Anaheim too. It would need 2 weeks minimum though although I think Virgin Holidays do this sort of package, and you can rent "classic" 60's and 70's cars to add to the fun................ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Mrs ST and I want to hire a Winnebago( Question ) and drive coast to coast, completely at our own pace and being 'Self-sufficient' all the way.

Also had Tasmania recommended to do the same thing (Although not a coast to coast marathon for obvious reasons!) Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad
