East Midlands airport parking and drop off.

Just been away via East Midlands airport which is my favourite normally.
They have now introduced a new system so there is no free time to pop in and out to pick up or drop off and to back this up they have introduced an ANPR system which sends you a £100 pound charge if you stop anywhere on the surrounding roads to drop a passenger off or pick them up.
Given that it is private property presumably one can just put the charge in the bin but why then are there marked Nottingham Police cars enforcing it ,surely that can't be legal and therefore an abuse of power? MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

The roads may well be public highways. And as it's an airport and people do daft things like leave car bombs at airports, it's not surprising they are enforcing parking restrictions.

You could try throwing the ticket away but I wouldn't come back and moan if they chase you for it... Wink 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

It's a private road it says so on the sign. Razz
If it is to stop terrorist bombs as another one of your little digs suggests then why do they let taxis in right up to the entrance or are Al Qaeda so thick they haven't considered nicking a taxi to put a bomb in Whistle
It's about making profit and fleecing us.
You used to get 20 minutes to pop in pick or drop off now no free time and an irate lady in the car park as I came out had to pay £7 to pick her daughter up because our flight had been delayed 40 minutes. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

Try picking someone up from Heathrow, it's impossible.
Drop offs a joke and you are expected to park to collect people, and the charges are exorbitant! ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I haven't had a ticket I was parked up whilst away in Paris all last week. Rolling Eyes

Just wanted to let anyone else who uses EM airport what the new situation is just in case they aren't aware of the new signage as 2 car drivers got talked to by marked police cars just for stopping and dropping off, they didn't leave the vehicle so my question really why are the police seemingly enforcing what is a commercial matter on a private road to generate income rather than a civil police matter.
All the laybys on the approach have now been blocked off with cones and police tape so that isn't even an option now either.
Would like to know if the local council has agreed to those being taken out of use on a public highway?

I really just dont buy into the terrorism avoidance issue, the short stay drop off car park is less than 100 yards away from the terminal so anyone who did want to affect the airport could easily park, pay the £7 for a couple of hours and be well gone before anyone saw them or just steal a taxi and park straight outside the door, its nonsense. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

i agree Chris, I can't understand why the police are policing a private area, and the blocking off of laybys is OTT

Leeds Bradford started charging to access the drop off areas, so your charged for dropping off, parking and everything nowadays there

Not as many people flying, so the airlines are not paying there fees to the airports, so i can see why they instigate the fee's, not sure if the police should be enforcing ANPR on there though,

Policing private land, such as football matches, yes, but getting drivers at airports is wrong and a abuse of tax payers money

Nick,
Perhaps the airport are paying the police to be their car parking attendants, that would be interesting use of scant resources given the frontline cuts to uniformed officers in Nottingham and Derbyshire.

Interestingly on numbers flying the carrier we used to use for many of our EU business flights BMI Baby are closing down, all the staff have received redundancy notices as they tried to find a buyer but no takers so your are probably right that will be an enormous hit for EM Airport in lost fees. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

This is what East Midlands say:

Quote:
Parking or Stopping in Unauthorised areas
Customers should note that the practice of drivers picking up or setting down passengers in unauthorised areas ( which poses a risk both to the safety of passengers and that of other road users, as well as causing congestion and disruption to traffic) is not allowed. The Airport is routinely patrolled by the use of mobile CCTV cameras and clear signage has been installed to warn drivers accordingly and offenders will be required to pay an enforcement charge which will be issued retrospectively.

A £100 enforcement charge is payable by drivers who stop their vehicles to drop off or pick up passengers in unauthorised parking areas or stopping on the internal roads. This charge is reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

They allow 60 minutes free parking at the shuttle transfer parking so dropping off can be done free. Most people could probably get away with the free one hour pick up time at the shuttle car park too. If there are lots of signs saying "park here and we'll fine you £100" and you park there then you get what you deserve in my view.

Sure, it might have been free before but maybe the greater numbers of people using the roads around the terminal in recent years has led to them doing this to prevent congestion as they say. Or perhaps the usual "they're doing it to fleece us" argument applies. I doubt it though.

Our local hospital introduced parking charges because people were using it for free parking when in town and this prevented patients and visitors from parking (it's a small site so parking is limited).

Were the police actually giving people parking tickets or was the ticket generated automatically? Perhaps the police were being paid by East Midlands to provide some coverage. Not surprising that the police would take some money to do that in these cash strapped times.

Although the road is private, some things can still be controlled by the police I believe; just as the police can charge you with dangerous conduct in Tesco's car park. If it is a "public place" then the fact that it is privately owned doesn't matter. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

There is absolutely no free parking at all in the drop off /pick up area in front of the terminal everyone has to pay and it is very expensive now,the lady I spoke to waiting to pick up her daughter from our flight had to pay £7 she said because our plane was delayed.
Shuttle transfer free parking may be off site somehwere but I have no idea where it is?
I've also no idea what the policemen were actually saying to those who they were talking to who had just stopped to drop somebody off but can only presume that they were being told they were getting a £100 charge which is generated automatically from ANPR cameras.
They would have to somehow prove who was driving as charging the RO would be completely illegal which would be impossible as the RO could just ignore the invoice letters.

You really think it reasonable to charge somebody £100 for parking for 2 minutes,I doubt very much that a judge would agree if it went to court for non payment of their unpaid invoice.

I think I will put a sign up on the private road in front of my house for our visitors who come up my drive instead of the public car park and charge them a £100 I would be a very rich man.

Really don't agree either that our limited local resources should be used to employ police to do a parking wardens job if that is what was happening. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

I had to pay a tenner when I went to pick up a friend from Luton Airport. Just took it on the chin and got on with my life - compared to the fuel costs of the round trip it wasn't that big a deal.

Did you look on their website? Usual MO for me when going somewhere to pick someone up: check the website for pertinent info such as parking.

Or they might have been talking to them about no road tax displayed, or no insurance on the system etc.

Yeah, that one is interesting. Maybe they just run it as a "enough people will pay up to cover the CCTV costs and we won't actually chase anyone who doesn't" basis.

Seems quite steep, admittedly, but then there is no point having a fine that isn't a deterent. As to whether a judge would throw it out; who knows - if there are lots of warning signs etc. then a judge might just say "fair enough, you were warned enough after all"

Fill your boots Thumbs Up You just need to get enough people to pay up so that you can afford to chase those who don't...

See above. The police might not have been doing anything related to parking. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Are you on some sort of prescription medication Shocked

I happily paid £55 for my parking (I wasn't picking up or dropping off) and then got on with my life.
Just trying to save any fellow forumers getting stung for £100 dropping grannie off at the airport don't think we need a forensic examination of the minutiae Whistle MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.
