Oil Change Year old car

I have a one year old Range Rover HSE Sport Diesel Auto. A week ago my Oil light came on and when checking the computerised system it showed that the oil was low and minimum. I put some oil in and left the car for the
day. I later checked the level again and it needed more oil, which I duly did, perhaps not more than 2 and a half litres in total. There is no dip stick in these vehicles.

The following day I started the car to go out, went 20 yards up the road and a warning light came on. I immediately turned round and drove back into the drive way and left the car. I called Roadside Assistance who
came to look at it and immediately arranged for the Dealers to pick it up on a truck AND NOT TO START IT.
They are now claiming that the fuel may have got into the engine and want to investigate and charge a large amount for this. They say that there is oil on the "Inlet track" which is proof it has gone further.

Has anybody else had a problem like this and will it be dangerous to drive this car if the oil has gone around other parts of the engine?
Be grateful for any advice.

one year old, I would say it should be a waarranty job. You've only done as the car has indicated. you can't check yourself, so are relying solely on the information the car provides. Bodsys Brake Bible

Where did you put the oil? Has your Mrs been driving it lately? Have you asked her to fuel up the car lately? Or did she see where you put the oil to top up the engine? See where i'm going with this one Thumbs Up If not, then i havn't got a clue Confused

Thank you for replies. Landrover are saying warranty will not cover this as it was me putting oil in and not accidental although I feel it is and and an error from computer and by the way, I am a Mrs.

Apologies my first post was incorrect and had nothing to do with fuel> It was the oil that they say has gone further into engine and may have done damage and will need investigating at a huge cost to myself.

Does anyone know if this happening can do so much damage?

If you were to overfill the oil then the increase in fluid and pressure would blow various oil seals inside the engine.

If you followed the instructions given in the owners manual then Land Rover can not say that its nothing to do with them.

Is the car now back with the dealer who supplied it?

Two and a half litres is alot to add to an engine.

Was the vehicle on the level when you checked it?

My apologies Mrs Hopwood Embarassed Did your husband put the oil in by any chance Question Embarassed
If your car was asking for oil and all you did was simply add the oil, providing you havn't overfilled the oil then it sounds like there could be a problem with the electrics or sensors on your motor Shocked which isn't uncommon for a sport to have electrical problems Whistle I don't want to insult your intelligence again Embarassed but are you sure the car was asking for oil and it wasn't telling you it was due its first service Question What was the warning on the dash in the 1st instance Question

There is some guidance in the book about how much bottom dip to top dip is.

Equally the computer is supposed to say add eg 1l.

That said there are a million little points about filling oil up (did you wait, add it all at once, miss read etc etc)

It seems like it might have been overfilled Mike

Even if you added two liters too much you only went to the end of your drive,so i cant see that doing the damage.? Sounds strange. SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.

if you have overfilled it, or miss understood the read out on the dash, then technically you could be held accountable, however the dealers may be trying it on with you, being a Mrs. So i dont know where you stand with this, Do you have a man friend who can go with you to the dealers ? They might treat him differently. 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater Smile)))

I can't believe that driving it that short distance would have caused significant problems. Confused
Personally, I'd be taking it up with the dealer manager, or set about finding another dealer, maybe also give LR h/q a call and get their take on it.
It's up to them to prove its your fault, which given there is no ability to check the oil other than the computer, I struggle to see how the can.
I'd try and deal with them politly, but if youre not getting anywhere, it could be time to start causing a 'bit of a scene' in the showroom Wink ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i
