Hi Jonny,
This has worked for me not saying it is good for everyone.
Like many on here have had dogs for years since I got my first house at twenty one so 30 years now and we always decided that rather than insurance we would pay for whatever came up.
Insurance would have cost probably £20 per month x 2 dogs x 31 years = £14,880
Over the years we have had a few operations etc probably cost £3k in total, but we have had a very good vet who has not been out to maximise income at my expense so there has been an occassion with a cancer lump on our great dane when he said yes he could have an operation to take it out, but it has probably spread to other parts and the level of anesthetic he would need to put him under might kill him so he suggest tablets to help with the pain & scooby lived another 9 months before he died, he could have taken a couple of grand off us for the operation which we would have happily paid when it was not necessary.
On the other side we have had horses for the last 20 years, and have only insured them for vets fees once competing at a high level & sadly one horse had a problemn with hocks that has cost circa £5k against an annual premium of £1k, again like your first post the problem was sorted but any reoccurence after a year was not covered.
Good luck.
ps we have two lovely border terriers one of which we are going to let have puppies as she would be such a good mother, is always helping with the house work by collecting any socks left around, even takes them out of the dirty basket & off the dryer & puts them all in her basket & then cuddles into them Paul
