You need to push the small pin on top and the knob pops and rotates, after that it's possible to remove it. |

Another tip is that when it is on the car, rotate the knob JUST until the towbar falls out, then the knob springs back to the locked position, you can then turn the key easily. It takes practice, but that's what works for me

I think it was designed as a safety feature - for the key not to be removed until locked into place. This is why the key was revised to reduce key breakages on the old type whilst stowed.
