that doesn't make sense? the calculation is really easy! owing to a design flaw the wheels are *really* easy to steal (less than 90 seconds if you know what you doing). Every so often we get a post on here "my wheel has been stolen". It seems to happen anywhere and everywhere with some anecdotal evidence of spikes in Essex Laughing .

I would suggest it's slightly more likely to happen than having your tank drilled and drained and more likely to happen than having a wheel or two stolen off the actual car - so still fairly low probability but a measurable risk. We use locking wheel nuts even though they aren't infallible but because they reduce the risk of an opportunist thief coming along and they stop a crime that happens less frequently than this.

Therefore £65 vs £200+ for a new wheel/winch is a fairly straight forward bet to make. Like, a really straight forward bet to make. And a one-off cost over the course of ownership.

Hence my lack of understanding why people wouldn't do it. But then I do like my http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance

haha Laughing Laughing to paraphrase wiki:

"An example of this would be the conflict between wanting to smoke and knowing that smoking is unhealthy; a person may try to change their feelings about the odds that they will actually suffer the consequences, or they might add the consonant element that the smoking is worth short term benefits"

There's also a chance some knife waving head case is going to kick my door down in the night demanding the whole car but I don't employ a minder on the off chance this might happen.....

exactly. Or that a meteorite might hit your house. Or that your brain might stop sending the signal to your lungs and you stop breathing and die.

I wonder how the chances rate on a scale vs the spare being nicked? Cognitive dissonance rule 101 "a person may try to change their feelings about the odds that they will actually suffer the consequences of a stolen wheel" Laughing Thumbs Up ============

Just to add my two pennith.....

Yes I can afford to buy a replacement wheel.

Due to where I park, garage at night and private car park at work, it is highly unlikely the spare will get nicked.

If I really wanted to save weight etc. I'd take the spare off and leave it at home.

However, on the off chance that I do need a spare wheel (or rather LR assist do Very Happy ) one dark cold night my £65 will mean it will probably be where I want it when I want it. Whistle Thumbs Up

£65 to insure against a £200 loss (and where your RRS is RRSBoy is like Fort Knox); then I'd say that proportionally its a high premium to pay.

On the face of it yes Thumbs Up But then you have to factor in the hassle factor Big Cry

Time for LR assist to change a wheel say half an hour (at leisure on a bad day).

Time for LR assist to recover you and then get the wheel/tyre replaced/repaired Idea Rolling Eyes

I wonder how many spare wheels have been nicked and the owner did not notice unless well after the event? It's not something I check every time i return to the vehicle and it's not immediately obvious it's there.
