Weights???

Whilst fitting my anti theft wheel cover today I noticed that on each side of the car, at the rear, there are 2 weights which are free to swing.

What are these for?

Jim

There is a technical name for them and a technical name for what they do but I cannot remember it.

Everything has a natural frequency at which it resonates, rub your finger around a glass and it creates a noise at a certain frequency specific to that glass. Add water to the glass and the note changes.

The axles in the car have a natural frequency and, I guess, in the Range Rovers case this must occur at normal road frequencies. Therefore the weights act as harmonic dampers to change the resonant frequency away from any normal road speed.

If you do hit its resonant frequency then the results can be interesting.....

I believe they are harmonic dampers. LR will have identified a frequency, during development testing, at which the suspension will have been excited by road vibration (resonant frequency). Fitting harmonic dampers de-tunes the car so that the suspension vibration doesn't cause resonance in the chassis/body.

It's a small version of the system used in big buildings exposed to high winds or earthquakes.

(edit: just seen the above post. That's two votes for harmonic dampers then Thumbs Up ) 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
