2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Baltic Blue

Squealing wheel/brakes

Evening all,

In the past week or so I have started to get a nasty squealing noise from the front offside wheel (or at least that's where I think it's coming from), it only occurs intermittently and is most obvious when crawling along in traffic at 10-20mph.

I'm assuming it's most likely to be worn brake pads but the warning light hasn't come on yet. Is there anything else it could be? How can I check that it's not the rear EPB (seems to have been a common problem in the earlier RRS's)?

And if it is worn pads, does anyone know of a good independent LR specialist in central Scotland?

It more than likely a glazed pad. It's when one of the pads gets hot and it.....well burns it and puts a hard film on it if you like, hence making it squeal.

Just had exactly the same problem (08 HST 35k miles), mine was back left. Turned out to be the pads, ended up having all 8 changed. Not only has the noise gone away but I had forgotten just how good it feels to be able to stop quickly !!!

See if you can see the thickness of the pad by looking through the wheel spokes. There should be more than 5mm between the pad carrier and the disc.. Beware that the inner pads normally wear quicker as they get hotter. If there is quite a bit of meat left on the pad, try giving the brakes a bit of stick.. My race car's brakes squeal like a pig when it's been driven slowly for a while but go nice and quiet when they are hot.

I think it's unlikely to be pad transfer on old discs and pads - unless you have given it some stick recently.
