Whirring Noise?

I have developed a whirring noise on deceleration. No noticeable noise on acceleration up to about 50, but if you lift off the gas, when the revs drop and the car slows there is a definate whirring noise.

If I sit in Neutral and rev the engine up to 3000 and lift off, there is no noise.

I wondered if it could be the alternator or the discs rubbing on the back plates?

Any ideas?

Presumably if it was the alternator it would make the noise even in neutral?

Perhaps it's a diff issue? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Smurf - looks like the sticking problem has migrated to your keyboard as well Rolling with laughter

Anyone else noticed that in the service manuals, etc, alternators are now called generators?

Think that when Ford owned LR all new service manuals were written in American instead of English.
