Dead alternator

Had the battery charging light come on on Tuesday morning as I drove to work. Checked the voltage across the battery and saw 12.4V with engine off, 13.5V with engine running. No change in voltage with lights and front heated seats on too. So battery charging still occuring.

Booked it in with LR at Oxford. Checked the voltage each time I used it. All as above.

Driving to LR garage this morning (Friday), the dashboard/centre console all went dark for a second before coming back to life. Error message on the suspension too now. Ah - that'll be the alternator finally giving up on life then says I. Turned off everything electrical (luckily it was just about light enough not to need headlights) and carried on to the garage.

Just had a call - after "a full diagnostic", the alternator has been declared dead. Replacement required and it's covered by the LR approved warranty. Phew! Unfortunately they don't have one in stock so the RRS will be spending the weekend at the garage. Hope to get it back on Monday.

Total use between first battery light and total apparent failure was about 5-7 hours of running.

Just thought I'd mention this in case anyone else has a similar failure and wonders about the possible outcome. If you have similar initial symptoms then don't try to do a long journey...you might not get there! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Not much warning then, - good timing getting to the dealer. How many miles had the alternator done?

Ady, I have had to replace 2 alternators in 18 years of driving/ car ownership.n 1 was on my TDV6 RRS and 1 on the TDV8 FFRR, both within the last 12 months!

Speaks volumes about Landrover quality control but i still cannot think of another car I would rather own Thumbs Up

Car has just hit 50k miles in 4 years. I assume the alternator is original. From initial failure to total fail was <200 miles 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Very glad! Thumbs Up
And it's not exclusively a TDV8 issue as indicated by simon1233's post.
The TDV8 does make up for it in other ways though Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That's a lot less than I would have expected. Not a LR garage I assume? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Exchange alternator for a 07MY TdV8, £204 and LR time to change 2.2 hours. Made by Denso in Japan same as the starter and I'm on my third one of those in under 40k and no wading!
