I have a 2007 07 range rover sport 2.7 se ,uk supplied and owned by me from new with full landrover service history,the car has just turned 60,000 miles.
Yesterday the engine stopped,the car has been recovered to a landrover dealer who says that part of the oil pump casing where the timing belt tensioner attaches has snapped off and the belt has jumped and mashed the valves.
Their fix is a new engine at £9000
Obviously the warranty has expired but this would seem to me to be either a design or build quality fault.
There were no signs of impending failure,oil level was still normal,and no odd noises prior to failure.
Apparently the tensioner is not seized or noisy and the camshafts turn freely (rather too freely actually)
The casing for some reason (a ''fault in the metal'' according to the technician) catastrophically failed and wrecked the engine.
Thoughts and reports of past experiences with landrover customer service appreciated !.

I had a problem with a master cylinder failing on my FL1 a few months out of warranty and LR customer services offered 50% contribution towards repair

Why a new engine ...I am no mechanic, but could it have done that much damage...?

Second opinion is what I would be getting.

They say that if they repair the engine then they will have to warranty it but if they fit a new engine then landrover will warranty it,I guess they don't rate their mechanics (sorry 'master technicians') much.
Fitting an engine is a body off job,don't know if the heads will come off with the body still on ???

Either way once its fixed its going,if LR help me out then its a new evoque,if they don't then its a long legal battle and merc or lexus.
Shame really I really like the Sport.

Definitely worth asking for a goodwill gesture and also checking your consumer rights regarding the actual failure. It may be out of warranty but if the defect is in the part you may have statuory rights to claim against.

I'd also question whether a whole new engine at £9k was called for - surely there's a repair option to be considered?

speaking from experience of getting a new sofa after the original broke after FOUR years, and a new TV after the original broke after THREE years i.e. both items waaaaaaaaaay out of warranty but failing way before reasonably expected, I would push like a motherphucker to get this fixed for free? engine pops after 60k and full service - who are they kidding  ============

would agree on the whole warranty issue, although cars are probably different as there is no way to prove how its been treated or driven.

Also agree with rrsboy with pushing. I got my mountain bike frame replaced after 5 yrs as I could prove it was a manufacturing fault (well some other failures found on internet). A bike might seem trivial but it was £3k's worth !

Thanks all,I have contacted an independent engineer with a view to having him inspect the engine and he has already said that he would be very surprised if Landrover didn't sort it for me.
His term was 'latent manufacturing defect'
Consumer direct say that my claim would initially be against the finance co that financed it (although long since paid off) who were.........Landrover financial services! (though they may have been part of Ford then)
It came from Lookers bury St Edmunds who I believe have since closed??
I'll see what transpires tomorrow.

Don't forget, legally it's down to the manufacturer to prove the fault wasn't there from new, or it's assumed it was.

Been offered 50 % contribution by Land Rover
