VIN# (on your car)

I checked Snopes and there is quite a write up regarding this info.

VIN NUMBER - WARNING

Here is INFO worth the price of your car....

WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT?
The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle,write down the VIN # from the label on the dash, go to the local car dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN #.

I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN #, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted.


The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your car.

He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop
shop with your vehicle.

You don't believe it?

It IS that EASY.

To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard.

By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.

I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck.

It's not true......it's just one of these emails some sad creates so he can sit back and know he has inconvenienced people......you try and get a key just with a VIN

Any email that contains:

I didn't believe it but I tried it! And pass this onto all your friends...

is junk / chain rubbbish!

anyway.....on a totally unrelated matter....

I hear that if you stick your fingers in your left exhaust and whistle the theme tune to Home and Away, £50 notes come out of your right exhaust......I didn't believe it, BUT IT WORKS!!!

In all fairness, the dealer will be asking a few more question, ie full name and address, can you bring a copy of your log book and insurance certificate, etc etc

Seriously doubt this can happen & agree that it smacks of a chain/spam email.
BUT, There are people on this Forum that work for LR Dealers that could confirm or deny
whether it's possible. I suspect the dealers are far more security conscious than the email

not possible, with us anyway i would require copy of V5 Logbook, Driving Licence and a household bill.

Same procedure with number plates, its all just common sense at the end of the day that we do this. Sophie Alltoft

question for you, with a VIN number can a key be made???, if so could a rouge employee make one, thus making this a very very lucrative venture for someone with the right access.

I have known this happen to a bmw mini owner, who bought a second car off a main dealer with a dodgy employee

yes i suppose that could happen, well it did in the film gone in 60 seconds i guess

a VIN is required when ordering direct from the factory, if the customer can't supply other documents we won't order, simple as that. Sophie Alltoft
